Ok I need help on building a gaming computer. I have some ideas on what I want, but not really sure where to go so I thought I would leave this up to the experts.

Budget: $3,000
Needs to include monitor, 22in (gaming at 1650X1050)
I would prefer liquid cooling since I want processor/video card/memory overclocked
I plan on using this for playing mostly MMORPG's like WoW, AoC etc.

first off, you wont be getting liquid, overclocking, and a 22in monitor for less than 3k unless you take a drastic performance hit

best fit i could get for OC'd power under a 3k roof, monitor included

if you prefer nvidia

Thanks for the fast reply! Now the first one doesn't look bad, do you think I will get a decent overclock with Stage 3 cooling? I wasn't sure about that, could really care less about noise.

And as far as video card goes, the extra money for Nvidia doesn't really bother me, do you think it would be a better investment for the GTX280 or stick with the ATI 4870?

there is never a garentee with overclocking of course, but i feel that air cooling, if properly built, can get you within a few degrees of liquid, for a fraction of the cost

see here

as far as those two cards... its sort of a question of power for your dollar, if you want an nvidia and feel the g280 benchmarks are worth the cost, swap that card into the first build link... it puts you up to 3353 unless you drop some other things... which i dont know what id drop honestly  having the monitor in there is sort of a killer, but still, 3300 for a sweet system AND a monitor is not bad at all

Ok well I'm sold on the Stage 3 cooling...my current build is liquid cooled and have never really looked back on air cooling.

As far as Nvidia/ATI....its a toss up for me, I am running ATI 3870 right now and I'm pretty impressed. Nvidia to me seems it is just an expensive price tag like Alienware, I can get the same performce elsewhere for cheaper I believe.

2x ATI 4850> Nvidia GTX280

id hardly say its "just" a price tag, but definately more expensive than ati... frankly you could crossfire into the first link there for about 3300 also

And just for the record. It's CrossfireX. NOT XFIRE (people who call it xfire f**king piss the sh*t out of me).

hah. But is it worth 2X Ati 4850 at 1650X1050 resolution or will I be better off with Nvidia GTX280 single card....I'm not sure.

I know that SLI/CrossfireX do not scale very well until your in the higher resolutions.

The GTX280 has the physics processor included in it which may be a reflection of the higher price. GPU's are really a matter of personal choice... I've had people tell me the most worthless cards were the best ever by various fans of a specific brand. Either one you have listed is a good choice.

If you go with an intel chipset Mobo I'de go with the ATI card if you go with the Nvidia chipset Mobo, I'de go with the Nvidia card. Only reason I say that is for the future, so you could go SLI with a GTX280 if you ever cared to.

I game at 1650x1050 myself, and have found that at least in the games I play, SLI works extremely well. I will say there is no way a single 9600GT could produce 110FPS on average at maxed details in CoD4 at that resolution.

When it comes to multi GPU solutions, you just have to uderstand that the drivers are critical, and if they are not ready for a new game's release, your performance may actually be less than a single card (in which case you disable the Crossfire or SLI until an update is realeased). This is more likely to happen with ATI cards than NVidia since so many developers are part of "The Way it's meant to be Played" program. Eventually, however, the drivers are updated for most titles.

Currently, I also believe ATI is the way to go. I have owned both ATI and Nvidia, and feel no particular allegiance to either. I care only for who can give me the best bang for the buck, and right now, that's ATI.

I remember when crossfire was new and even pc builders were calling it Xfire. Where did that name come from and did crossfire always have the X on the end? Or is that an updated crossfire?

P.S. more thread hijacking... Tyler, I love your new sig block! Smile
