Budget:
Roughly $3000 for rig Buying monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers separate Expectations: Looking for a rig that will play most high-end games comfortably and last for about 4 years or so. Planning on dual monitor setup, probably 1900x1080 resolution on one monitor and 1280x1024 on the other. Usage: 70% fps gaming and LoL; 20% web browing/e-mail; 10% movies/media Special Needs: Looking for help specifically with video card recommendations (SLI 470s and upgraded PSU vs. 580) as well as with cooling options and which would be needed or most effective. Of course, feedback on any other aspect of the config are most welcome and appreciated! well using 2 monitors and gaming on 2 monitors isnt really the same thing :)
youll only use 3d on one monitor with a dual setup
as a tidbit, you will tax a video card more by hooking up 2 monitors with different resolutions... worth mentioning
your build is $3018
heres double the gaming power for almost $100 less
580s are in a tough spot since they jacked the price. but there is no garentee at all that the price will come down, so i wouldnt hold my breath
you could fit an ssd into my build if you were comfortable getting back up to 3k
but a cooler looking case and a dinky 120mm rad NOT > a 2nd 580

I would go with his setup but go to sli x2 gtx 480 instead. You will save $409 and the difference between the 580 and 480 is that the 580 has a few more cores activated since it runs a bit cooler and its quieter. Its a nice improvement for $30 like it was but not $200. Right now it costs a lot extra since the demand is way over the supply. Its more a card to fix everything wrong with the 480 than the difference between a 470 and 480.
This happens frequently with new tech releases so it will probably go back down in a month or two after demand declines and supply builds back up. |

Hey guys,
Thanks very much for the feedback! You're right !ender_, I guess I was getting a little carried away with all the little extras available. :) I think maybe I will start with your suggested build as a base and maybe go down to the 480s, as maxyme suggested. I realized that I don't necessarily need to go all out to enjoy most games that I play. Plus, I can use the money saved to maybe buy two of the same monitor or upgrade somewhere else in the config. My only concern with the 480s is that they will be generating more heat. Is that something I need to be concerned about or do you think I'll be fine without any additional cooling? I think I will go with the NH-U12P for the CPU as suggested after checking out a review. Also, I think I can do without the SSD as well... Another quick question: It looks like the 480 has HDMI out, so with an HD monitor and a blu-ray drive I shouldn't have any trouble watching blu-ray movies, right? I think I'd just need some additional software such as PowerDVD with proper codecs, unless I'm mistaken. Here's the updated config: 462054 Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X58 (Intel X58 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1200W Digital Storm Certified (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Highly Recommended) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (64MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD1002FAEX) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: Blu-Ray Player/DVD Player (Play Blu-Ray and Play DVDs) Optical Drive 2: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Internet Access: Wireless-PCI N 300Mbps (Supports 802.11n/g/b) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 1.5GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: FREE: Hot-selling game with a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 or above graphics card Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Grey (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: FREE PROMO: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 5 Year Limited Warranty What do you think? looks good, just make sure you get a monitor that is hdcp compliant, and dual link dvi and hdmi are interchangable
