    Posted: 22 Aug 2008 at 2:57pm
My current machine is failing so I am looking into a new gaming rig despite the fact that I am not currently playing anything.  Normally I play MMOs and not much else (LOTRO, AoC, etc..).

My idea with this configuration is to keep it cheap but allow for upgrading the RAM and video card when I need the performance boost.  I will be using my current video card for now (8800 GTS 512mb OC).  I am open to possibly going SLI at some point, but its more likely I will stick with single card upgrades.  I think I will eventually get 8gb of RAM... seems to be cheaper to get the RAM off newegg than buy it preinstalled.

I am skimping on the motherboard... is this going to be ok?  From what I found, all the boards are pretty similar.

Do I really need a 750W ps?  Future video cards are my consideration.

Will stage 1 cooling be sufficient?  MY video card doesn't run too hot.

I've got an external HD so no need to get 2.

Is the extra $226 for the Q9550 2.83ghz processor worth it?

Here is the configuration:

The 750w power supply will be necessary if you have any plan of the possible SLI/Crossfire in the future.

As far as the extra $226 for the processor I would have to say it's not really worth it.

I would however suggest going with the stage 3 cooling as it looks as though you are having them do some overclocking.  You'll get a much better OC with the extra cooling and your system with be better able to handle the stress of an OC.

If you are really looking to save a few bucks going with onboard sound is another option as it's fairly easy to add a sound card later.

I have to agree with Lawdog on the Stage 3 cooling especially if you are doing an OC. Stage 1 cooling will not be enough.

Thanks for the feedback.  How much better is Stage 3 cooling over stage 2 or stage 1?  Consider also I am going with the smaller case... I don't know how much that plays a role in the effectiveness of cooling.

If you want to OC then go with liquid cooling, you will get lot higher speeds from it. If not liquid then atleast stage 3, otherwise drop the OC from your config.

Go with 4GB of ram.

Go with 4 year warranty

You got no graphic card but you getting a sound card? why not drop the sound card and call DS and ask them to install the graphic card you want? Its gonna be tough testing your PC without a graphic card.
