personally id wait to see how the Q9xxx chips do. Though keep in mind that most games still only are opitmized to use 2 cores. Though id assume that will be changing in the next year or less. But if you must get a computer before that then id say go for the E8400 chip. In todays games its usually faster overall then the Q chip. As its better to have 2 CPUs running at 3GHz then having 2 running at 2.4ghz and 2 others just sitting idle.  Keep in mind also that the quad core is going to be pumping out more heat as well.

I believe SunfighterLC has the right idea.  However, in many if not most games today, you're going to find yourself GPU limited with either of these chips. In the long haul, the quad cores will win out. The long haul may be a little longer than people expect.

I think by GPU limited he is saying that both these CPUs are good for gaming, the difference between the two isnt very much. And if you were to get any major slowdown in gaming performance, it will most likely be because your graphic processor isnt doing well enough (GPU) and it wouldnt be because of these CPUs.

I could be wrong though, ive only been reading up on this tech stuff for about a month now. And yea the year or so for gaming to start using quad cores was a total guess. =P. If it takes longer oh well good for me because I want to use a E8400/8500 lol.

Honestly since you are on a budget, get the cheaper E8400 at least right now its 44 bucks less then the Q6600 (that could change, the E chips are VERY popular right now). That 44 bucks could be added to a GPU upgrade or just a savings overall.

Both choices bring with them additional costs, but I think overall, it's less expensive to use a dual core rather than a quad. I don't know that I'm the "average gamer" but I do feel that I gain advantages in using a quad core. I don't game on a pristine install of an OS with only Windows and the game I'm playing installed. I generally game in a Vista environment, and have upwards of 60 processes running at all times in addition to the game I'm playing. I don't really know why Vista needs so many processes running, but it does, and I am thankful to have the extra cores to take up the load.

Take what Sunfighter said about heat to heart though. Quads definitely require better case cooling than Core 2 Duo's. An 8400 on the other hand, if you plan on overclocking, needs better RAM to get best results than a Q6600 would, for example.

If you do not plan on overclocking at all, I would say the choice gets easier. In that case, even a quad fan like me has to admit the Duo makes more sense.
