eomfd there are a lot of changes i would make but first tell me, you said high end build.. do you mean high end no budget limit? high end you want the best computer possible for x dollars? or high end you want a gaming rig?
we need to know:

the Asus "5870" is really a 5970. It's a 5970, with some ridiculous freaking power on it, possibly the best one on the market. Still though, you'd wanna go dual GTX 480, not dual 5870 GPUs, more power that way. I dunno, your choice.
Now let's see... - I doubt 750w will cut it. You're running dual 5870 GPUs. And an Asus Ares. I mean seriously, that thing needs a 8-pin and two 6-pin extra power connectors. It's BEAST lol. - Screw 2000mhz RAM, speed seriously really matters mainly when you're doing overclocking so high you need the RAM that high too. - Liquid Cooling should focus on your CPU. Liquid Cooling and overclocking a GPU doesn't usually net that much of a gain unless you really go nuts on it. Seriously, even if you do, the power usage of that OVERCLOCKED Ares will be INSANE. - Go Intel SSDs, it's cheaper, and you shouldn't technically see any difference with RAID'd SSDs. - Screw the Killer Xeno card. I think it really only shows improvements in lower end systems. It supposedly takes load off the CPU by running network on its own dedicated processing units, but really, when it comes to these kinds of PCs, there's so much processing power on the CPU anyways that it becomes irrelevant. |

Here ya go, Config. No. 422377
Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Black OPS HailStorm Edition Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 980X 3.33GHz (Hexa-Core) (Extreme Performance) Motherboard: EVGA X58 FTW3 Edition 3X SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) Dunno, EVGA is preferred for Overclocking around here. System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) 1600Mhz should be all anyone needs unless you get into ridiculous overclocking. Power Supply: 1000W Corsair (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Need a bigger PSU to support that Asus ARES. It's a 5970 really. But seriously, 1x8-pin and 2x6-pin for additional power. Like I said, it's BEAST. (CORRECTION : 1x6-pin, 2x8-pin) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (160GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: X25-M MLC Edition) (Extreme Performance) One Intel SSD should still give you about the same performance as RAID'd SSDs. Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD1001FALS) Western Digital is preferred IMO over Seagate, Seagate's drives sometimes have a bad rep for failing. Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Screw the Killer Xeno. CPU Speed makes the lightened load by it irrelevant. Video Card: 1x ATI Radeon HD 5870 4GB (Asus ARES Unlimited Power Edition) (Two 5870 GPUs Integrated) You know, whatever anyone else says, I'm starting to think this thing will be faster than dual 480s. LOL. Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Creative Labs X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional (PCI-Express Slot Based) Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 5: Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System: CPU & Chipset Focus on CPU overclock, that's where you'll see performance boosts. (EDIT : Bah, lemme give you another reason. Is there even a water cooling block for the ARES...?) H20 Tube Color:Black Tubing with High-Performance Fluid (UV Lighting Reactive) Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (UV) (Creates Glowing Effect for H20 Tubes) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) (CORRECTION : I don't even know whether it's safe or not to overclock this thing lol. Some report that they can hit 1200Mhz on a core clock, but really, it's loud enough as is. Your choice. Water cooling's probably a no though, I don't think there's a block for it. Feel free to set me wrong though) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty OH! Also, be SURE to ask DS for the Asus ROG Mouse. It should come with all ARES boxes, so you should be able to get it. Just for reference, here's the clocks for the GTX 480 and the Asus ARES 5970... GTX 480 GPUs - 1 Graphics - 700Mhz Mem Clock - 1848 Mem - 1.5GB GDDR5 ARES 5970 GPUs - 2 Graphics Clock - 850Mhz Mem Clock - 4800Mhz Mem - 2GB allocated for each 5870 GPU (4GB Total) Fun! ?? The 5870 is not a 5970.. the 5970 is 2 5870's put together on one board, then downclocked some to meet the TDP limit of 300 watts.
2000 Mhz RAM does not have anything to do with high overclocking, the 6 core's do like more RAM speed than the 4 cores.. like to 1066Mhz RAM bottlenecks the 4 core, 1333Mhz will bottleneck the 6 core. 1600 Mhz on the 6 core is ok, but it does do a bit better with the 2000Mhz even 1867Mhz does just fine.
I would recomend liquid cooling the GPUs GTX 480's over the CPU.. if noise means anything to you..
Basic rule of thumb, for every 10C you lower the temps, the Silicon life will double.. overclocking wise, for every 10C lower in temps you gain about 1.5%-2% more stable overclock potential.
A NIC card can help in online gaming, a little bit, but there are $30 ones that will just as good of a job as the Killer one.

yeah, that's what the asus ARES is...dual 5870 GPUs stuck on one board. they threw that 300 watt limit out the window though, apparently.
EDIT : Doh, my bad...ARES isn't even a 5970. I dunno what kind of official card it's called then. Asus calls it a "5870 X2". Still has dual 5870 cores though. And, some report that they are hitting pretty high overclocks with it, but really, I don't think you CAN watercool it. The cooling design's already been super thought out, and I don't even know if there's a water cooling BLOCK lol. tom's hardware reported the power usage on it =o ![]() supposedly runs cooler and less of a power hog than a GTX 480 sli rig, but runs a lot louder than a single GTX 480 though. my bad on the ram D: Edited by ablahblah - 15 Jul 2010 at 10:44am |

Okay okay, so the first draft was pretty rough but here are my
justifications.
First: I guess I could drop the Raid 0 and go with just one intel SSD. But if I have anything resembling a slow boot time for windows I am going to have all of your World Of Warcraft characters assassinated...for relazies Second:Killer 2100 is probably not necessary, however I have read that it is a pretty legit improvement over the previous killer cards and I like the software that comes with the card. BUT just to be on the safe side and to avoid fratricide with the other components....we can kill that card too. Haha kill... Third: Q "If you are going so high end why only one video card?" A "Can I get two 5870s?" The one video card idea was to help to cut down on the noise. Sure I could get a triple SLI monster but the sound on three GPU fans kicking ass all the time would probably get on my nerves. However the fact is that DS probably wont be able to WC this card so I might be better off going with something else. Open for suggestions. I want it to be quiet and powerful. Forth: Bigger power supply...I agree. Fifth: You can OC the 5870, they software provided with the card actually makes it pretty easy. DS OC is free, so why not let them do it because I am sure that they are better at it than me. Sixth: I don't have a monitor yet, open to suggestions. I want it to be high end like the computer ;-). Seventh: Thanks for the help, let me know what you guys come up with. I will check again tomorrow and use the advice to make another build. The comp will be for gaming and just to be awesome in general. Price range should be below 7500. Thanks again! |

Alrighty, based on what youve listed as needs/wants, if you gave me the money and told me to buy you what i thought would be a sick machine, id by this
$3888
now, if you told me that you wanted a great gaming rig, but you only wanted to spend what you had to, id go with
$3117
to me, the difference in price is worth it if they are both under budget, but i think it would be a mistake to try and sli with a budget like yours. unless you are trying to push a HUGE res, the 480 is all you could ask for right now. better off saving the money to pick up a better card when it comes out, and sell yout 480 or store it.
any questions about my choices feel free to ask

as far as monitors, a lot of people will tell you that the new rage is the "ips" monitor, you can find good choices from Dell and Hp on these, expect to pay at least $400.
i dont personally see a point in these, but our budgets are very different. just make sure you end up with something that is at least 1920x1080, 5ms or less, and at least 22", if the ips monitors dont interest you, i can show you a few choices in a lower price braket

First of all thanks for the help! Secondly, I really like your build #422418 but I have a few questions about it before I go through with the purchase. -With the Lian Li Pc P80-B case does it have a viewing window? and why would you choose that case over the Assassin or the Hailstorm? -Wont the 12050W power supply be pretty loud? And do I even need a power supply that big if I am just going to have one 480? -Last question is regarding the processor. Why not go for the 980x and ensure that I won't need to upgrade my CPU for a long while. I am computer savvy enough to swap out a video card, but I would rather not mess with the processor unless it was absolutely necessary. Thanks! |

-With the Lian Li Pc P80-B case does it have a viewing window? and why would you choose that case over the Assassin or the Hailstorm?
no it doesnt have a window.. at that price range, im choosing solely for looks, with your processor and video card both under water, the case cooling matters a lot lot less, and affords you the chance to choose the case you think looks the best, so do that
-Wont the 1250W power supply be pretty loud? And do I even need a power supply that big if I am just going to have one 480? there is little to no difference in the noise from that power supply vs 750. you would not need more than a 750, but that will prevent you from ever having more than one GPU, if youre ok with that, go to the 750 tx
-Last question is regarding the processor. Why not go for the 980x and ensure that I won't need to upgrade my CPU for a long while. I am computer savvy enough to swap out a video card, but I would rather not mess with the processor unless it was absolutely necessary well, for several reasons. we'll start with the fact that you will unlikely even make use of the 8 logical cores from a 920 overclocked to 3.8ish, so the 980x is super overkill
then we will go to the price:performance ratio. you might get better scores on synthetic benchmark tests, but the 920 is already more than you'll use day to day, and the 980 is Nine Hundred Dollars more.
for that cost, you could get another 480 and watercool both of them with the 1250 psu, which would improve your gaming way way way way way more than getting a 980x
AND youd still have an extra $350 to send me for my consulting fee!
so i wouldnt personally reccomend it

Alright here is what I have come up with.
Ticket Number 425007 In short I took your advice to keep the 930 and i used the extra money to add another 480 and WC both of the video cards. After I spend the $4569 on this PC I doubt I will want to spend money to upgrade it with a new video card anytime in the future. I kept the power supply the same but changed the case to the HailStorm just cuz I like the looks better. Other than that I just changed the tube color to white and the internal lighting color to UV. Only other question I have is if it would be worth the $150 to LC the chipset, and if it is worth the money to get the EVGA SuperClocked 480s rather then the normal ones. |

hailstorm black/white color scheme = thumbs up
chipset is really only worth lc'ing if you go into extreme overclocks that the chipset would otherwise actually begin to overheat at. evga superclocked are just factory clocked higher by evga. nothing better. it's just a gimmick that sounds cool, but it's just a waste of money for something you could just do in less than 5 secs via evga precision, and can possibly cause instability problems in some systems that shouldn't even be running overclocks. reconfigged it a bit what i did.. - dropped superclocked, it's a useless cost - added side panel fan for gpus. i dunno, now that you're watercooling, decreasing ambient temp locally at the gpus would help, right? correct me if it conflicts with air pressure workings. - added video overclocking. when you watercool, the gpus will be on their own liquid loop, so it won't affect the CPU's cooling. also, the fans are 3-pin obviously, and because of that, they do not regulate speeds based on a microcontroller's temp readings. in english, it means the fans don't rev up as things get hotter, it consistently cools. so the gpus will still run good at DS's overclock, and the radiator fans won't run loud either. Chipset cooling is a great idea, if you have the budget to do so. With an air cooled PC, you have one, two, maybe even three fans blowing air across the chipset, with water, you have none.
Also look at the V reg temps on most overclocked air cooled rigs.. 70C-95C. With water 40C-45C Stability, and reliability can come into play when V regs are rated at 85C and are running 95C.
Extreme overclocking and water just don't mix, water is good for stock, to medium overclocks, but even chilled water cannot do anything extreme.
