Hi all,
 
I just bought the Razer Lachesis gaming mouse.  I really like it.  However i do have to use it with more of a claw grip then I was using with my other mouse,
 
My question: Do I need to get something like the Razer Exactmat to reap the full benifits or is this just hype?
 
My problem is this...I don't mind buying an expensive pad/surface but I'm not sure I'd like to hear any grinding or friction on the hard surfaces.  does anyone that plays on a hard surface notice this sound and is it annoying to you?

I just play on the hard smooth surface of my desk Andy...give it a shot and see how you like it....I find it's a lot better than playing on a pad and you'll get used to it pretty quick. I was a bit surprised how much better my mouse control is and you don't have to worry about coming off a pad.

I have a regular cloth mousepad with a gelled wrist pad. Works just fine with my Razer Death Adder. Speed and precision is fine, and configurable with the DA's driver.
 
Once I have the mouse configured though, I uninstall their driver. For some reason the middle mouse button never works in a lot of games, and they've never (yet) fixed it.
 
Just curious, Andy, but are you left-handed? I'm right handed and didn't like the Lachesis at all (got hand cramps using it)

I just took back the lachesis for the very same reason.  I am gonna give the death adder a shot.  I am right handed (as far as mouse is concerned, but I write with left) as well and the lachesis hurt my wrist a bit too.  Playing a bit with the mamba and death adder at best buy, they both seem very comfortable.  I won't pay the $120 for a mouse though unless it's absolutly needed.
The lachesis seems like it is hit or miss.  Some people on various forums seem to swear by it but the grip you need with it seems unorthodox.
Also, the death adder now has a higher DPI sensor and that's the one i got.

To madmax:  I tried it a bit just on my desk and I think i have been programed through the years to use a pad.  I doesn't feel right without it.  The friction on the desk is a bit like scrathing a chalkboard to me.  When i get my new one I will try a bit more and see if I can adapt to it.  Thanks! 

Justin: What didn't you like about destructor? Those glass surfaces look sweet.

like most things, until you use one, you don't know what you're missing, but once you use it, you never give going back another thought
 
this also holds true for discrete sound cards vs on-board, and better performing larger displays (i.e. moving up to a 24 or 30 from a 19) - in each case, once you hear and see the difference, there's no going back

I don't like the destructor  for doing precise mouse work on blueprints, the glass ones seem to work better for me. And also a minor bug, it doesn't look, feel like it is worth the $$. Still a decent mouse pad, just overpriced IMHO.

Check out the site I posted.  One of the cool features about their pads is that you can customize them.  They are also a hard slick plastic surface on one side, and a lightly roughed reversed side.  So, you can have two sides to choose from which you'd like to use.

I have used a Steelpad 5L since I first bought my DS machine.  I highly recommend it.  The edges do start to fray just a little after years of use, but otherwise awesome.

Yeah, I like the Death Adder a lot. I like the rubberized gripping surface, it reminds me of the old Ergostick joysticks I used to have for my old Amiga.
 
Like I said, with the Death Adder: install their driver, setup your preferred precision and speed, then uninstall it. MS's driver works better than Razer's, unless they've finally fixed the problems with it (notably, no middle mouse button in many games).
 
I've seen the Steelseries and other "high precision gaming" mousepads. I'd have to find some kind of seperate gelled wrist support, though, I've been spoiled by my current Belkin pad  Ouch

Thanks everyone for your time and advice.  It is so much appreciated.  All the choices overwelmed me a bit and I went with a razor golliathus.  I got the oversized pad at a slight discount so I went with it.
 
Anyone have opinions on gaming keyboards? Needed?

Well, you don't need one to game, LOL, but if you want one, I'd suggest the Logitech G15.
 
Lot's of games have plugins for it's LCD display, and you can display temps, RAM usage, CPU load, etc, on it while gaming. Nice backlit keys for gaming in the dark. Good key action.
 
The Razer keyboards look nice, but I've read about problems with them, so avoiding them for now.

Psimon is right.  You can have the best equipment, but if you suck, then there isn't enough hardware out there that will make you suck less.  Having pretty "gaming" keyboards and mice can make you look like you're the rad dude on the block, but when it comes time to get in the game and start pwoning, you better have some skills or all that bling will simply be a credit card debt with no return.

All toung-in-cheek, my friend.  Of course one would want the finest of peripherals surrounding them after purchasing a brand new rig.  I say... "YOU GO GIRL!"

I was actually considering the Saitek Cyborg as well.  I'll ponder it a bit.  I currently have a wireless logitech that isn't too bad for surfing the web at least but the mouse needed to go for gaming.  The keyboard I can take my time with a bit more.

Good points.  I've played a lot of sports and understand that point in regards to equipment and so forth.  However, my thinking with getting better stuff now is to actually save money in the long run.  I'd rather go good stuff upfront then to find out after a couple cheapy keyboards that I would have liked to have a few features. 
 
When I powerlifted you could go cheap on a belt, for instance, but find that one good belt was more comfortable, worked better and would last the life of 3 cheap belts. 
 
Thats why I ask here about mice and keyboards because I really don't know how much a good quality one makes a difference.  From what I gather, it (having quality) matters more for the mouse then the keyboard.

Damn! You beat me to it. I had a steel series colth pad and love it with my Deathadder. Now it's worn out and I'm going to pick up the 5L pad..

Probably the biggest advantage that a "gaming" keyboard has over let's say, a Logitech Wave (mine) would be the way the board is set-up.  Most gaming keyboards are designed to reach and control the most important buttons in the easiest and quickest manner.  And, gaming keyboards allow you to bind multiple keys to accomodate the games needed functions.  And, gaming keyboards just look damn cool, with all the blinky lights and glowy LEDs.

One of the coolest things about a DS rig that has all the LC UV lighting and all your lit keyboard, mouse and all the glowy lighting on the case, is after you've turned the lights off in the room.  It's like your own freaky little light show.  Sometimes I just like to turn the lights off and stare into the light.

The control side is WAY rough though.
 
But, I prefer the Logitech G9 to any of the 'Razermice' though.

Now you see, this is exactly the guy you want to watch out for in a game.  The guy that uses a Sponge Bob mouse pad is the guy that will own you.  He'll chat with you in game and tell you how many kids he has and all the PTA meetings he has to go to, and then he'll kill you as you think to yourself, "this guy's no threat."

Why would someone buy a computer from DS and then insist on using garbage to link up to the system? I don't see the point in having a crap keyboard, mouse, or headset hooking into a DS computer. These are the products relaying your thoughts and movements to the computer yes? If you ask me, its "Go Big or Go Home" and if your already at home..then cry to mom and ask her to make you some chicken noodle soup while you continue to cry...Gaming is like any other sport...first you practice, practice, practice..then you get good enough to make the team, then you get all high end gear to bring full circle your ass kicking abilities, and unleash them on "the other guys" Then when the smoke clears and the guns are cooling off, you can light up a cigarette and say "Owned"

So in terms of keyboards and mice of the high end, its really about how they enhance your abilities...and "looking cool" just happens to be a side effect of their badassosidtyAngryShocked
 
Personally I have used Logitechs G15 Keyboard and MX18 mouse...(optical ftw in my book) for the longest time, but Ive decided to give a few other compines a chance. I would suggest if you have the extra cash trying out a few diffrent keyboards and or mice. Or if you don't, see if some of your friends have other brands and give em a try to find out what really fits you.

One reason I didn't go with the logitech g9x was all the add on stuff.  I was concerned that when recentering the mouse that the different grips would be loose and soforth.  Do you find the quality of the mouse good and do the grips stay on tightly?  I wouldn't want loosey goosey grips.

If you ask me, its "Go Big or Go Home" and if your already at home..then cry to mom and ask her to make you some chicken noodle soup while you continue to cry...Gaming is like any other sport...first you practice, practice, practice..then you get good enough to make the team, then you get all high end gear to bring full circle your ass kicking abilities, and unleash them on "the other guys" Then when the smoke clears and the guns are cooling off, you can light up a cigarette and say "Owned"

So in terms of keyboards and mice of the high end, its really about how they enhance your abilities...and "looking cool" just happens to be a side effect of their badassosidtyAngryShocked
 
Personally I have used Logitechs G15 Keyboard and MX18 mouse...(optical ftw in my book) for the longest time, but Ive decided to give a few other compines a chance. I would suggest if you have the extra cash trying out a few diffrent keyboards and or mice. Or if you don't, see if some of your friends have other brands and give em a try to find out what really fits you.
Well said.  Your right.  Why dish out the dough on a great PC then run crappy on the things we actually use to "interface" with. 
I am using the death adder right now and i really like its size.  I think I have been a fingertip grip guy because I'm a big dude with big hands but with the death adder it actually fits my hands which is new.  Still i may try the logitech g9x if people can attest that the grips don't get loose and all the add ons don't amout to something that doesn't feel solid.
For those that use large mice with the palm grip...do you guys have a special way of quickly recentering the mouse on the pad when you need to?  This has been the only negative that the mouse is somewhat hard to pick up and recenter without loosing the proper grip.

Seriously, the only difference I've seen in my gaming as far as the input gear goes is the day my mouse went optical. No more mouse ball was such a blessing. "Gaming" gear hasn't really improved my skills at all, at least not so I've noticed. I like the Logitech G15 because I can monitor temps and performance while I game.
 
Razer really strikes me as 80% bling and PR. They also need to resolve their driver issues, mouse & keyboard. The only reason I like the Razer (but it's a BIG reason) is the nice rubberized material they use for the grip and it's comfort. Performance-wise, though, it's just another optical mouse.
 
I really do wish Logitech hadn't changed the color of their backlight, tho' . . . blue was better than the orange they have now (I've got the original and the new G15). Green would rock! Been eyeing this keyboard, but it sure is pricey ($120 USD! ):

So do you think that DPI is really just sensitivity settings?  That is all i feel it is.  It just feels like i boosted sensitivity when I boost DPI.

I've played with the DPI settings on my G5 and it's insanely uncontrollable at 2000 DPI.  I keep my mouse on a medium DPI setting and that's fast enough.  I can't imagine anyone being able to use 2000 DPI and beyond that and control the movement with any accuracy.  It's just way too fast.

That steelseries keyboard looks a lot like the Z-Board that was made a few years ago.
