I posted much early for a similar build design but now that I've been able to get some
solid advice from the forums I figured I would post again with a few additional questions.

Here are a few reasons I chose certain specs that I know will get flagged as unnecessary:

i7 980x: I will be running numerical solvers that can be run over several cores and
will immensely benefit from the increased shared cache

12 GB 1600 ram: Once again this is for the work related part, certain programs I plan
to use can push 8GB fairly easily

Stage 4 LC: I am not planning on OC'ing my cpu any further than DS will do for free but
I will be running the processor on all 6 cores for several days/weeks non-stop so I want
the temps to be as low as possible...also it looks cool and the money is there

All in all I have about 5k to spend, saving money (in this case) is not money in my
pocket so anything under this cap will go to monitors/keyboards/ect

My only question is regarding the SSD, the -M series from intel from what ive read does
not have the highest writing speeds on the market and it looked like the OCZ vertex2 had
great test numbers. Is it worth it to specifically request this SSD? It would be a higher
cost but my thoughts are that I higher write speed will make a noticeable difference in
the time it takes to save the data from these large simulations.

since your going with cpu only lc... it would be advised to get a ram cooler. you can find this under the boost memory options. when using air cooled system the excess air cooling the cpu cools the ram because of its location, so it is redundant.however with cpu lc you don't get that bonus.

if your going to have this computer running weeks on end you may want to look into lcing your gpu's, however i will leave that for someone a little more knowledgeable.

the bonus to the intel ssd is you can achieve 98% full with virtually no performance loss while with indilix drives such as ocz ones you can suffer greatly with performance starting at 50% and major at 75%. i will also allow someone who is more knowledgeable to get more in depth.

Noise Reduction: Noise Suppression Package Stage 1 (Optimized Airflow & Fan Speeds Only)

That will most likely trap heat inside your chassis.

Not really, we don't close any of the vents. Especially Stage 1, which doesn't even use the noise absorbing material. It's just ensuring all the fan speeds are slow enough to keep the system quiet and still cool at the same time.
