Budget: $4,000
Third time returning customer here. My last PC I bought from DS back in 2012, and I couldn’t be happier with it. It served me very well and DS will always be my first recommendation to anybody looking for a good computer. Right now I am looking for a general purpose gaming/workstation, although it will be primarily used for gaming and recording/streaming. I mostly play action-RPGs like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. However, I do enjoy pushing these games to the limit; ie max settings, 1440p sometimes pushing to 4K when possible (although it isn’t required). Other tasks I plan on preforming include 8K photo editing, 4K video editing, and very basic 3D modeling. Like mentioned before this won’t be the primary use. I’ve always been a fan of the speeds and the longevity of Intel, but I was wondering if switching to AMD would be worth it? I’ve heard that AMD doesn’t last quite as long as Intel and longevity is one of my top priorities at the moment. Any feedback is greatly appreciated, and I do plan on purchasing by the end of the year. I must alert you as I do everyone that Intel is old-tech PCIe Gen3 and AMD is ALL PCIE gen 4, and has been for a year. Whatever you have heard about AMD in the past, I think is no longer the case. I've been an Intel guy for ages, but AMD has risen from the ashes. Right now, until Intel hits in March or April with it's PCIe 4 parts, AMD has the edge.
I'm going to let it go at that. The really unfortunate situation is that nearly all the higher-end parts you need are in very short supply right now. Sometimes it's one thing, then it's another, and I can't really make suggestions without running into those issues. No doubt in my mind, a Ryzen 9 5950X would crush the 10990K for all your photo and modeling work, and be neck and neck for gaming, but the wait on those is just a guess. Last word is they are trickling in. Same with the 5900X. The 5800x wouldn't do. The RTX 3080 you selected would be my pick too, but the wait on those right now is adding a month to the builds that want them. The only comment I have on your build, besides the old tech thing, is the motherboard could use some scrutiny. I'm sure you could put a few extra bucks there and get better thermals and perhaps a bit more lifespan. You already know you are waiting for the 980 PRO, and I can assure there will be a wait for the 3080, so it might not be a bad idea for you to take a look at the Ryzen 5950 and what it could do for you. I would also suggest, if you are wedded to the Samsung 860 Pro, perhaps you not pay the premium for it here. Maybe the 860 EVO would be fast enough? Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. |

UPDATE
I went ahead and created a second build based on your feedback, this one uses the Ryzen 9 5900x. I was wondering does the 5950x justify the $350 price increase over the 5900x, because if it really does I would have to save money in other places. I also upgraded the motherboard to the ASUS ROG Strix X570-E, people online generally seem to think this is a good one to work with. Finally, I changed the storage over to the Samsung 970 evo plus and the 860 evo. The reason I originally went with the pro was lifespan. Aside from that, everything else is the same. Also, I’m really in no urgency to receive this. I could honestly wait until May or June if needed. I'm just a humble gamer, so I'll have to leave the CPU decision to you. In gaming it wouldn't matter a bit. What I know is cores/threads are great for your editing and especially modeling work. I know you said that was not the focus of this rig, but only you can choose. The 5900X will still outperform the 10900K at those tasks IMHO, so it's not a bad choice at all.
You do know you get a $400 discount for getting over $4000? If you don't mind the wait, maybe you should read up on what Intel has coming. I've heard they will top out at 8 cores, though, so will probably underperform at editing for you. Hope it helps. |
