Hello all,
I have configured the following PC. I believe it to be amongst the best possible however i have a few questions. But first of all, My main uses for this PC would be: Gaming (possibly multiple clients at once) Bluray Writing/Playing Video Encoding Video/Photo editing Word Processing In general i like to multitask, and i also like to leave the PC running. It can get pretty hot around the PC in the summer, ranging around 20-30 degrees Celcius (the room) I also plan to have a two monitor setup, most likely at 22-24 iches, 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 Once the technology gets fleshed out i may upgrade to a triple monitor Nvidia 3D setup but that is not really planned for now. So my questions are: 1) is the 8gb 2000mhz RAM better than the 16gb 1600mhz RAM i have selected? 2) is my HDD setup so that i can have the SSD for OS/programs such as photoshop and 4GB of Raid 0 File space? Is that what Raid 0 does: meld the two 2GB HDD into one 4GB? 3) is there any incompatibilities between any of the parts? For example 1000W is not sufficient for SLI or not enough cooling for the 4.9-5.2ghz OC. 4) this would be my first liquid cooled system and i am under the impression that it will be sufficiently cool in the summer etc while also allowing overclocking of the processor to high but stable numbers. Also, it takes little maintenance to keep running. Is this all true? 5) i live in canada, so what is a rough estimate of the brokerage fees that would be placed on a PC such as this one? Also, does having to cross the border add to the shipping time? 6) is the P67 motherboard 'old tech' compared to the x58? i really do not understand the differences and clarification of that would be appreciated. 7) is this system ready to upgrade to the Nvidia 3D in the future should i choose to? has anyone had any experience with this? The PC is below: Ticket Number: 573896 Thanks in advance for any replies and help! |

1. ram speed = ram speed
ram amount = multi tasking. 2. you lost me here with your 2GB and 4GB comments. 3. parts are fine quality can be better. 4. if your room temp is above 80c you gonna have coolling problems no matter what you use. 5. contact DS directly for that [email protected] 6. x58 is old gen, p67 is new gen mid range, x79 is new gen high end coming Q4 of this year. 7. you can do 3D with this yes but you can only do dual sli. your hdd1 is the one that holds the os, so that should be your ssd. so if you need 16GB of ram then just go with that amount, ram speed you are not gonna notice a difference from. your oc is too high, you will endup with a high vcore and that will kill your cpu in 2 years or less with 24/7 use. change mobo to deluxe, psu to 1000w corsair, gpus to 6970 cf. if you are interested in 3D gaming on 3 monitors then you gonna want to wait for the x79 platform cause you gonna need tri sli. change case to hailstorm if you want lc on cpu/gpu. forget upgraded fans and fan controller lighting needs to be uv or the uv tubes wont' glow. drop os boost and gpu boost. Thanks for the reply!
Based on this information i am probably going to revise my config, however, i am a bit confused with the whole dual and triple sli thing in regards to the nvidia 3d. Also, i am not sure what you mean by deluxe mobo, i do not see this in the options for mobo. And to clarify my question 2) I am really asking what RAID 0 does, but since i will place the SSD in set one, that question is no longer relevant. Instead, i will ask this: what is the difference between an 2x 2TB set of HDD for set 2 vs 1x 2TB set of HDD for both set 2 and 3? Would they both end up with 4GB total space and does the 2x option combine them into one drive in some way? |

You will have to stay with the Nvidia cards if you want 3D. ATI doesn't really support 3D (even though they have the option, it might as well not exist).

Without going into technical details, putting two hard drives in Raid 0 basically doubles their speed (while having full access to the 4 GB), but also increases the chance of failure, and IIRC, if one hard drive goes bad, both go bad. In the modern day and age, SSD's are so many times faster than standard drives that Raid 0 is kinda pointless.`
RE 2x2TB for set 2 vs 1 x 2 TB in set 2 and 3, both would end up with 4 GB total space. No difference, doesn't combine into a different drive. It's just there for ease of configuration (some people like lots and lots of drives) and possible RAID setups.

in 3D your fps gets cut in half, so if in 2d you got 60 fps (smooth gaming) in 3d you are getting 30 fps (no so smooth gaming) to compensate you go add a second card (dual sli), the larger the res the more gpu power you need for 3d, so if dual sli is giving you 30 fps, then you need more gpu power for more fps, thats when the third card come in, (tri sli). go back and look the deluxe mobo is there. in "easy mode" its the fourth one from teh top. |

Thanks for all the help so far
Here is another newbie question lol Am i better off with 3x SLI Triple (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB (PhysX) (Overclocked Edition) or 2x SLI Quad SLI (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 590 3GB (PhysX) (EVGA Classified) or 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 3GB (PhysX) (EVGA 03G-P3-1584-AR) each being roughly the same price. What is really throwing me off here is the fact that 2x of something is a quad but 2x of the other is a dual. Looking at the specs, the GTX 580 and 590 seem quite similar, so i dont understand how 2x of one could be better than 2x of the other so much that one is a quad and the other is only a dual. To top things off, there is an option for a SLI 4-way, being much more expensive, but how is this any different from a SLI quad? Note: I am sticking with nvidia because the more i read about their 3D vision kit the more i like it. (Yes im a sucker for marketing )I know as i post and post it seems that i know less and less, but please bear with me as this is all very expensive and i want to be sure i am getting exactly the right pc. |

LOL you are never better off with the 590/6990.
so you are left with dual sli 580, or tri sli 580. but first let me explain. 590 is actually 2 gpus in one card. 580/570 are one gpu in one card. 590's 2 gpus are in sli but its internal. so when you purchase a single 590, whether you like it or not, you are in sli. that is not the case with the 580/570. on paper it would sound like 2 x 590 gtx (quad sli since you are talking 2 gpus per card for a total 4 gpus in quad sli), would be the most powerful, but in reality its not the case, the gpus in the card have to be down clocked due to heat issues, so the card ends up slower then 2 x 580/570. add to that the fact that right now tri sli scaling is better then quad sli scaling, what you endup with is in real life tri sli 580/570 will give you better performance then quad sli. so thats the 590 and why 2 of it is in quad sli and 2 of 580 is in dual sli. now as for your dual sli 580 3GB vs 3 x 580 1.5GB. the vram does not make a huge difference, not enough to compare dual sli 580 to tri sli 580, so needless to say tri sli wins every-time, however if you have the funds for higher res the vram helps alot with aa settings. oh quad sli is quad sli, in can be internal or external, called 4 way sli, 4x sli, sli quad, but at the end of the day, its all the same, its 4 gpus in sli. |
