I'll be ording a DSO system mid-Feb and I've got my build all finalized - except the GPU.  8800 GT or 8800 GTS (the 512MB G92 model)?  The price difference between the two is significant and really impacts my build with each based on budget.

Based on a lot of web research (forums, reviews, etc.), I'm worried about the single-slot configuration of the GT and its low stock fan speed.  While my system isn't going to be a monster (budget is $1600), heat is a concern for me because I live in a hot region and can't always run the AC.

Plus, I worry about having to crank up the GT fan - noise and perhaps cutting the card's lifespan down.

Most reviews and forum opinions I've seen label the GTS quieter and much cooler (dual slot config).  Plus there is the added benefit of a slight increase in performance over the GT.

So my question is - who out there has a GT or GTS that could provide some insight?  Have you had heat issues with your GT?  Any thoughts on whether my concers are really valid or maybe overblown?

There are some heat issues with the 8800GT, but, it's not like every card does it. We have also been updating the BIOS on the 8800GT cards with the new fan speed upgrade.

Both choices are great, but, I would recommend the GTS.

I went with the 8800GTS 512mb because of that reason plus they are having manufacturing troubles with those cards.Ive read some reviews on this card and its a real nice card.It has almost the performance of the GTX.They also say they run alot cooler then the GT.

In my builds, that will require a drop in processor (to the 2.66 dual core) and a 520W PS to go with the GTS (to fit my budget).

Not related to the thread, but a 520W PS is sufficient to handle the card, correct?  What about in the future... non-SLI next gen GPUs shouldn't need more than 520?  Thoughts?

What are you sad about?  You still are getting a card that will dominate games.  From what others are saying this card rips, you just need to control the fans.
