    Posted: 23 Sep 2008 at 3:55pm
Hello all, im new to the forums, and have quite a few questions that I hope this community can answer for me.

Going to make a purchase probable next year, will be a high end gaming rig.  My numerous questions are as follows.

1.) What is the cooling difference between the single and dual loop systems, and what are the temperatures in generall.  Use dual GTX 280 and core extreme processor for basis.  Im about constantly checking my temps, and like as cool as possible. What do the experts at DS consider optimal/acceptable temperature for your components?  Especially the CPU, GPU, and RAM

2.)  I dislike the fan controller/temperature that you guys use.  I have recently got the NZXT Sentry LX and love it.  Would it be possible to have that instead of the one you offer?

3.)  I dislike LED fans and such, but love UV.  Would it be possible to have that instead?  If so, would it be possible to have the visible connectors in UV reactive trim, such as PSU cables, pin and molex conectors that are visible?

4.)  I have other cases that i would rather use than your due to vanity reasons :)  If i told you what i wanted would it be possible to use that case in leiu of the ones offered?  It would be a full tower naturally, such as the LIAN LI PC-V2010, or the lian li pc-a77.  Its not a deal breaker, cause i like your cases well enuff.

5.)  Custom colors.  Would that be possible?  And are the cases clear coated after painting, at least on the exterior?

6.)  Noise.  Doesent bother me much, but dont want air cooling in a super high end rig.  With the best water cooling setup, how fares the northbridge/southbridge cooling?  Am i assuming you put the max amount of fans in that are available to you after water cooling is in?

7.) Would modding my own case, such as cutting out with a dremel and putting a custom sign on the side backed with UV reactive paneling be voiding your excellent warranty?  If so, would it be something you guys can do?

Sorry for such a long post.  But those are my concerns.  I just built a modest rig cause my old one pooped out on me after 5 years, will be wifes school comp when i get new next year.....  Ive build my past 3 rigs, but I just dont want the hassle anymore :)  Want to let others deal with the setup and troubleshooting.

From all my considerable research, DS is the only one i would trust to make my build.  Been reading in the forums for awhile now, love what ive heard.  Good customer service is worth its price in gold.  Thats why im here.

Thanks

"You Dream It, We Build It" they say, and they're not kidding lol.  Here's some examples.  (Note customer here too lol, I don't work for DSO.... YET, they live a bit too far though for the moment lol)

For me I was allowed to specify each specific part like, what brand I wanted my motherboard to come from.  Striker II Extreme (790i Ultra variant) from Asus was my pick.

http://www.digitalstormonline.com/forums/forum_posts.asp?TID=3878

This is pretty much an example of me requesting a specific paint schematic, when I was chatting with Sarah (one of the workers) on irc.  There's even a green version of that lol.  So it is possible.  But if you say... wanted to do custom graphics (print an image on a computer) they'd have to outsource it. (Let someone else do the specific paint image)

1.  Dual loop separates two loop systems.  Best way I can put it is that for example.  One loop only handles the CPU by itself, the other loop handles the GPU.  (There's gonna be more than one radiator I believe for this)  Because having only one radiator handle the CPU and GPUs only holds the risk that the radiator won't be able to fully cool the liquid afterawhile.  Worse case scenario supposedly.  (Someone correct me on this if I said this improperly)

2.  Ahaahah I wasn't too mindful about what fan controller I wanted to use, or even if I wanted one.  Until I saw this.  Then I really wanted one on mine lol

3. Again you can request anything you want, I was gonna go LED fans on mine, and put grills and dust filters also since I live in LA near the freeway, where dust is ALOT more frequent.  (One thing I realized.. does DSO do imports of region specific only items???)

4.  Yep any case you want.  Check some other topic under this board wanted the Lian Li PC80R case.  (Of course expect people here to recommend you a case that potentially may perform better than the case you picked, though they're only giving suggestions of course, if you're after looks feel free to go with what you want.)

5.  -Check above-

6. http://www.svc.com/sounddampening.html  I live with my family, even though I have headphones, so sound woudln't matter to me, my parents MIGHT say otherwise, so I was thinking of sound dampening every nook and crany of my computer lol.

7.  "Have Dremel will travel." As Kelly joked.  Not sure HOW serious they do case modding though.....

Just my two cents Ouch

1. your temps will depend on your parts, what you will get next year, is not gonna be the same as what is out to day.

dual loop means each line has its own radiator and is for CPU/GPU setup.

with dual gtx 280's and a good case, liquid cooling for CPU, you won't need to liquid cool your cards.

2. you can use any part you like, but that will make some changes to your order/return policy.

3. should be same as 2 I think.

4. should be same as 2 again, BTW I looked at LIAN LI PC-V2010, can you tell me how that is better then the HAF? cause I don't see it.

5. again should be as 2.

6. you gonna have to call DS for that or maybe somebody else knows.

7. I think same as 6.

you've come to the right place DS is a great place, hope that clears up something for you

I also forgot to mention you can even specify what water blocks you want for your GPU (and CPU most likely)  I needed my GPU waterblocks to be as thin as possible since I need every PCI/PCIe x1 slot lol.

Many thanks Axel!  I have that Fan controller you linked, and absolutely love it, wouldn't have another!  My build will be high end, such that people will say i dont need that much.  But i don't care, gonna build it to last a minimum of 5 years, then start over again.

Thanks for somewhat clarifying the liquid cooling for me :)

I still would like to know at what actual temps I can expect from idle/load on an extreme processor and 2 or 3 GTX 280.

If they can do all this, then im sold.  Vanity is a big part of my system, i want all the show and all the go.  Bling as they say.  With the power to back it up.

just remember all of these changes will not allow you to return your system for a full refund if you don't like it.

Hrrrm makes sense, after all we are going past what's being offered by DSO, so it would be our own fault for not liking what we changed ourselves.

I understand how great HAF is.  Even if by specs it performs godly.  But I really must implore that you cease and desist trying to convert everyone to the HAF fanbase lol.  Besides, has there been any performance charts showing the HAF vs other cases?  It's been awhile already so I probably should check now and seeif reviews listed the charts for it.

Even the 4 year warranty nag was better Smile

DST,

I never said any case was better than HAF.  HAF is an awesome air coold case, and case in general.  I have always used Cooler Master cases for my builds.  but HAF is too freakin ugly to even put in my home :P

PERSONAL OPINION ONLY!!!!   lol

Remember, Looks are important to me for my case.  with the way haf is made, i wont be able to do the mods i want to do anyway.  Plus, as stated previously, its too ugly.  Just my humble opinion, everyone to their own.\

Its gonna be fully watercooled to reduce noice, whether i need it or not.  Money isnt that much of a problem, so i want it as cool, cool looking, and quiet as possible.  And you are right DST, i have come to the right place.  DS is awesome and so are you guys.  The knowledge base here is amazing!

No love for the Cosmos S paint schematics =/?  J/k! Lol.

HAF has everything else EXCEPT aesthetic customability.  What you see is what you get cause you have to admit... It'd be pretty hard to change the look on that thing....  (Even the paint schematic that Sarah made for Cosmos S wouldn't work with that case lol.)

Actually I'll be happy so long as they offer a flat side panel option for the left side of the HAF.

Btw have you seen this Lian Li case Mezz?  http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/LianLi/Tyr_PC-X2000/

I think this is the tallest case from Lian Li... I think lol.

We must be opposite in taste cause I find the LIAN plain and ugly, its too square, but like you said personal opinion, if you like that case then you must love the 950si we have

Ok if you want liquid cooling (not water) all they way around then go ahead, if you got the money and its your things then go for it, you can check one of our member here who has one:

Beautiful case Axel!  Only thing is i like my drive bays open.  Not much on doors.  I like to have lots of LED panels in the front, like that NZXT Sentry LZ controller.  I also thought about the Lian Li cube.  But, since im not building this time, I wont ask them to use that.

And DST got me thinking, sinceim not wanting the hassle this time around of building, I really want to shy away from anything that will void a warranty.

Have you guys seen the new asus watercooled board?  Interesting to say the least

I like it, but have seen no reviews on it yet.

Its all good DST...lol

Different opinions make the world a great place.

Before i go all LIQUID cooling, I hope a DS member lets me know what temp differences there are.  If its not that inspiring, i may go with CPU only cooling, as it will be OC'd.

The one i just built for a temp solution till i buy a new one was a 9800 gtx oc2.  I was amazed at the temps i was getting!  60ishC idle, and about 80 playin crysis!  Havent build a new one in a long time, so i was worried about temps.  I bought the AC accelero extreme 9800 cooler for the card.  Its HUGE.  Lowered temps to 40idle and 48 on max game settings crysis.  Was impressed.  My cpu fan is also from Arctic Cooling as well.  Great quality products

.... New??? What new?  Striker II Extreme has been out for quite awhile lol.  Though I will say it's probably better to use actual watercooling products than the built in one of Asus.  Beyond that though.  Alot of reviews said that motherboard can handle some serious overclocking lol.

http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=611&pageid=27
http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/asus_strikerii_extreme/

If price isn't a problem, then go with this motherboard.  (Or any motherboard that is under the Republic of Gamers brand supposedly)

Well if you're going with Nvidia that is.  The Radeon equivalent of the Striker II Extreme is Rampage Extreme.

I also realized that the Lian Li PC-X2000 doesn't have squat for drive bays.  What you see on the side is what you get Ying%20Yang

Then again not necessary.  Since it supposedly has it's own fan controller, and even then the default amount of fans is more than enough supposedly.  Besides.  What doors?  That Lian case is no different than the one you initially picked, other than being taller and etc details.  Only different is your optical drive bays are on the side panel lol.

I just noticed that..lol....when i looked at the pic i just saw the fron to fit and thought, aw man, big doors.  I looked again, wow i was wrong.  And the drive bays on the side?  All 2 of them?    If there were, say 5 or 6 slots (not as if that many are needed) i would really like it.

-shrugs-  We're only here to suggest after all lol.

If the computer case covers all the initial necessities.  Than there's probably a good reason why it confidently only has so many drive bays lol.  (Two optical drive bay, and one 3.5 (floppy) drive.)

http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.php?/cases_cooling/lian_li_tyr_pc-x2000_chassis/1

Not sure if this case would be ideal for water cooling unless you abuse velcro or something lol.

i figure when i do build next year, will be close to when the new stuff is really starting to come out, not sure if i should get the current top of the lime stuff or the new stuff thats gonna coe out and be a lot higher.  Leaning towards the curent high end stuff myself.  Bevause i still think it will be viable in the next 5 years.  Will be alot cheaper, and still play most anything you throw at it.  \

But please, correct me if im wrong

Nehalem is coming out before this year and its a true quad core.

Trust me when I tell you this time next year, you will either be buying Nehalem or waiting to get sandy bridge, which will turn out to be longer wait then expected.

Man, it all goes so fast!  And im betting a Nehalem is gonna be pricey!  You think Nehalem will cost about as much or more than the extremes do now?  Im gonna try to keep my build under 6k.  And the way it is now i can build a monster for that price.  Seeing as how i wont need a monitor, mouse, kb, speakers, or anythng like that.

Just the core system.

actually Nehalem is set to be lower then the current extreme chips as far as price.

but until it actually comes out, its all words. But no I don't think that the Nehalem extreme chips will cost more then the current qx9770.

All this new stuff, maybe i should just keep what i have a little longer then.  I can upgrade to a gx2 GPU and OC my q6700 to last a little while more :(

Just really wanting to sink my teeth into a really sick setup!

Maybe 2010 will be best time, get the sandy bridge...course there will be another monster revolutionary breakthrough waiting to get us by then.  I almost wish technology would stand still for a just a few years to make me feel good about my purchases!

Well, will there be alot of apps that can actually take advantage of the new CPU?  There is scarce enuff that actually utilize the new quad cores.  And gaming wise, maybe the current quad cores will be perfect in the 4 years or so to come.

Im mainly a gamer, so thats how i justify my purchasing.  If im not gonna see a huge improvement over the current extreme lineup, maybe there is no sense in waiting for nehalem or sandy bridge.

if you are thinking sandy bridge, thing more like H2 of 2010/H1 of 2011.

nehalem will have to have a 2 year life span so end of 2008 probably will mean end of 2010 for sandy bridge

Thanks for all the advice guys!

And, as far as a case goes, i think ive decided Ill just go with the DS 950i.  Has plenty of drive bays, and since i only need 1 drive bay, 2 for my fan controller, and 1 for other, its plenty.

Nice and square like i like.

All this thinking of the future has me hungry...so im going to wendy's to get a Baconator, or 2

Thanks guys

Awesome guys!

Just a heads up, if you do make a true custom order, it will be a special request and you will not be able to return the system for a refund down the road.

Of course, if you have problems, we will take care of you. We take pride in ensuring our customers are happy with their product and we value each and everyones business.

Warmest Regards,

Alex

I dont plan on returning anything unless it arrives damaged or it isnt working.  If it isnt working, then you guys fix the problme and all is well with me.

I will definately be wanting a custom color scheme, and neon instead of led colors, all liquid cooled and such.  So just like my original post with the exception of the case.  Will use the 950i.

Also, would it be possible for you to tell me the actual temps on a liquid cooled setup with the extreme processor and 2 gtx 280?   And maybe compare that to stage 3 air?  Either way, but the CPU will be Liquid no matter what.

Also, DST and AD have been takin good care of me :)

Some smart guys/gals you have on here!

Plus, whwy would anyone want a refund on one of your systems?  Ive seen them, read how all the peeps brag on them.......you dont see this on other forums..wait...other builders dont have forums!

Its crazy, i like alienware, they use great materials, build quality machines, but...they are more in tune personally with you at DS.  You have a choice of cases!  Tons of ram choices, with different brands, even motherboard choices.

So...it really isnt hard to decide to come here.  The build may take a little longer, but ALL the builds are tested, not just a random sampling.  You get to come here, talk with other customers and DS employees about how things are going...etc.

I like Digital Storm.  And im sure i will get better care and service here than i would anywhere else.

Well lets say your system acts up and they can't figure out what is wrong with it, since you have ordered custom parts in there that they don't cover, the system can't be returned for a full refund, where as a full DS system can be.

sure its a long shot something like that will happen, but you never know.

Mezzeron, unless I misunderstand, the only thing you give up in making a special build request is the 30 day, no questions asked, return period. A defective machine is another thing altogether. I think what everyone is getting at, is when you ask for things outside the norm, thinds DSO does not normally stock, they are not going to take those items back, even with a restocking fee. Your actual warranty coverage is not going to change. No matter what case you have the system built in. BTW, if you like something with a bit more custom look to it, I know Digital Storm has done some very nice systems using the Silverstone TJ-10. I mean, *really nice* systems with custom paint jobs- the works.
