Just a thread to sort of discuss various ways to apply thermal paste on your CPU.
Personally, I apply two medium-thin lines lengthwise, a little bit apart from the center of the CPU. Usually gives me a decent spread without overflow. |

Noctua recommends a single line just like our video shows on our YouTube channel.

Not a major point of contention as both line and dot method should be fine but here they say a dot about 4-5mm. If Noctua updated their method I guess I'll try the line next time and see how it works out.
Oh and I just checked out your new vids. Great job on the instructional videos! Edited by AndydViking - 20 Dec 2010 at 5:19pm |

I personally use a dot on small CPU's, and a line on bigger ones like 1366, the amount is more important than the line/dot technique though IMHO. Then there is the TIM itself, some are runny, some very thick, so that will also change on what would be the better technique. |

yep I'v noticed that some TIM are a bit runny and some are thicker. some of the thicker ones have a bit less open time. In the much colder winter season here my overall ambient temperature is a lot cooler in the home. So the open time seems to be a bit shorter.
I always like to see vids and get some tips personally I like to lightly 'tin' the mating area to see what I have then use the dot or rice grain lines on larger CPU's. |
