Topic: How is my Lumos build? Posted: 26 Dec 2019 at 11:12am |
Budget: $2,700
Expectations: Allow Max settings on most games and run cool and quiet. Will most likely purchase 1440P monitor, not concerned with 4K gaming. Usage: Gaming, web surfing. I have a laptop I use for work so no office apps needed. This build hits my budget with the $300 discount. Any other advice or recommendations? Welcome to the forum DarkEnigma06! Congrats on your Verified Customer badge...!
Build looks good. If you really want 2K/1440P max game settings in most games, you would probably be better off upgrading to the stronger RTX 2080 Super GPU. You will play at fairly high settings with the RTX 2070 Super, but not many titles would be at Max settings at 2K, if any. At 1080P yes you should be at max or ultra settings with the 2070 Super, but not high frame rates at 1440P. The only other thing I would counsel is that on air cooling alone we usually do not suggest Over locking the video card. Too much stress and added heat for very little GPU gain. If you decide on any changes, DS is easy to work with...just contact them soon as possible to minimize any delay. |

IMHO you don't have the budget to go for the higher performance of a 2080 SUPER. Fact is, the 2070 SUPER is the price/performance choice at 1440p. It will get you Ultra performance on most of the titles out there with a few exceptions that are generally not well coded for GPU response. The 2080 will struggle a bit on these titles as well, and overall, you are not looking at frame rate differences that justify the extra cost of the card. You're talking ~55% more money for ~15% gain.
The other issue you may wish to consider before you stretch for such a poor return on investment is that we are pretty late in the GPU sales cycle. The next gen of Nvidia cards may be out within the next 6 months, with a total reset on price/performance. Just sayin'. |

I received my new Lumos about 2 months ago with a somewhat similar configuration as yours, but with air cooling and 1TB of Samsung 970 Evo Plus. I got the RTX 2070 Super and am quite happy with it. If you do a little Internet research you will find a lot of folks are very satisfied with the 2070 Super and 1440p. My budget was about the same as yours and I could not justify the benefit:cost performance of going to the 2080 series. I am sure it is a good performing card, but for my purposes it wasn't that great a gain for the price difference.
BTW, you are going to love that Lumos case - a beautiful design that really showcases RGB lighting. Also, those ML fans are virtually silent. Edited by Bob100 - 27 Dec 2019 at 9:18am |

Lol...I think it’s great that folks with the 2070 Super are so happy with their choice.
Just the same, about 15% better performance IS in fact available with the RTX 2080 Super if desired. It’s up to each customer to decide what’s best for their use...and if the GPU choice should exceed your needs...then all the better...lol. Cheers! |

Thank you all for the feedback. Personally I do not see the 15% increase to the 2080 Super worth the extra cost. Looking at benchmarks I feel the 2070 Super more than meets my current needs and I will lower a few game graphic settings as needed, and I will potentially upgrade in a few years if I feel the card is not holding up. But it is a huge jump from my current laptop which I built 6 years ago, so I should be more than impressed. I feel the rest of my Lumos build should hold up for quite some time where I will only need to upgrade the GPU.
I made the one change with support and decided against overclocking the GPU as I want the system to remain as quiet and cool as possible. The minimal gain in fps would not be worth it, and I had originally selected the option only because it was no charge. Now the wait for my computer to arrive! |
