I have had 6 right now I use 4 mainly because my step dad was what you would call a grey hat hacker (this was like 10 years ago dunno what he does now lol) being around him and knowing what kinds of information he could get makes me worrie about whats really on my computer. Also have read a few books about hackers and what they have done to people and the econemy its scarey stuff.

I run scans with all 4 programs once in the morning then at night and I have found like spyware doctor might pick up something spysweeper didnt or vise versa.

Another thing being a gamer things like key loggers have done some real damage to mmo gamers and even some people I know.

anti virus is pointless to run more then one, you just bugging the heck out of your system.

if a hacker really wants to hack you, then short of disconnecting from the internet, there is nothing you can do.

also its the firewall that stops the hacker not anti virus.

use nod32, spysweeper and a good firewall, and lot of common sense, and you will OK, thats all you need.

viruses don't install themselves, you have to install them, scan your files before you install them or open them and there is no way for you to get a virus, nod32 scans your surfing and will take care of any viruses you might be coming in contact with.

spyware doctore has some false positives, spysweeper does not.

"if a hacker really wants to hack you, then short of disconnecting from the internet, there is nothing you can do. "

yeah very true but a hacker is not going to risk prison over a home computer enless your wealthy and im far from it lol.

Thing is you can have the best firewall and everything else but there are still carnivore programs in some isp's and there is nothing you can do.

But reason why I have 4 programs is some have the definitions and bad sites up to date or they are missing a few and it only takes one. But maybe im just over protective of my info.

hackers don't hack you for money, they hack you for you identity, and/or to use your PC as a server/zombie.

again your anti virus does nothing to help you with hacking.

also I mentioned already that no apps can help you if a hacker wants you, that included firewalls, so we agree on that, but a hacker will have a hard time if you have a hardware firewall properly setup and secured, not saying it secured, just saying it makes it more difficult, hackers always rather deal with easy targets.

if you have important data, you should keep it on a driver off the network, so there is no reaching it. other then that, any security you feel you have, is a false sense of security.

yeah, your knowledge on the subject is far greater than mine and I agree with ya there.

but id theft is pritty much money since money is really just credit and what you have in the bank does not mean much when you want to buy a 300,000 dollar house but your credit has been tarnished ya know?

but then again your just as likely to have your id stole from your everyday trash than from the computer good thing they invinted paper shredders.

Norton I would agree is excellent, especially the 2009 version.

Really it comes down to intelligent usage of the internet and reasonable precautions to prevent/mitigate infection.

Intelligent Internet Use:
--This one should be simple,
  • Do not visit porn sites.
  • Avoid warez and hack/crack sites.
  • Do not execute programs from sites you would not give your credit card to in order to make a purchase. If you do not trust them with your money, you should not trust them on your computer.
Reasonable Precautions
--Another Simple One
  • Run a reputable Virus Scan Utility at all times.
  • If you use DSL or Cable Internet get a good router this acts as a hardware firewall, any decent one can be set to discard Pings, Ident requests, traceroutes etc, this will make your network invisible to passing scans making your chances of being hacked just because you are there nearly 0%
  • Run a malware scan at least once a week with a decent spyware scanner, Spybot S&D or Adaware. Anything is better than nothing but those two are at least reputable and free. If you do not mind paying Webroot Spysweeper is probably the best spyware scanner out there.
Between those two basics, you should be able to enjoy the net without getting burned.

Yes, I always run a seperate malware scan, I use Adaware SE, I find it works for my purposes. If I am worried I will grab the latest sypbot and run it for a second opinion but I do not tend to keep spybot installed.

The reason being Norton Anti-Virus and firewall are top tier, their malware engine is ok, but not as good as Adaware or Spybot.

I also run WinPatrol, one of my fave utilities, for two reasons... love dogs and it barks when you open it... and two it tracks all changes to system registry keys that occur during program installs and lets you chose to disable the change... it is the tech geek in me, I like control.
