How much do multiple cores matter (particularly for games)?
Is a 2.5 ghz quad core better or worse than a 3 ghz dual core?
I've heard some describe multiple cores as serving almost the same function as RAM... I don't really understand exactly.
Is it true that most games right now do not take advantage of 4 cores but only take advantage of 2? if that is true, will quad cores become much more useful in the future?

Yes, they aren't taken advantage of yet, but they will be in the future. They are really good right now if you like to run a bunch of applications and multitask. That's not to say they don't run games well. Games run wonderful on quads.

Thanks for the replies!
so it seems plausible that in the future a 2.5 ghz quad will be superior to a 3 ghz dual?

for games don't matter much however if you look at the new core i7 quad core against the E8xxx dual core, you will see that the i7 quad core does better, in some games the difference has been as low as 20fps and as high as 40fps you can have a look here for some charts Edited by DST4ME - 08 Dec 2008 at 5:03pm |

Hmm, anyone know which games take advantage of 4 cores right now?
And what sort of performance increase in a game that properly takes advantage might one expect going from 2 cores to 4? Edited by hotcakes22 - 14 Dec 2008 at 2:32am |

Latest Source Engine games (Half Life 2, Left 4 Dead, etc)
Lost Planet Unreal 3 Engine games (UT3) Flight Simulator X Supreme Commander are the only games that I can remember off the top of my head that take full advantage of quads. |

Crysis doesn't take advantage of all 4 cores but with an i7 using turbo it's possible to get more performance.

I wouldn't say it overclocks better than the dual cores. I can hit 5GHz with the e8600. |
