Hi Folks,

DS has been banging their heads trying to get my system (QX9770) to OC and after nearly 2 weeks has it up to 3.6ghz, but it still fails the load tests.

Based upon what I've read here and other places, this seems low. The box has HAF932 case + stage-2 cooling. I offered to upgrade to liquid cooling, but they said that would only buy me 200mhz and that it wasn't worth it.

Question: what is a realistic OC to be expected with air/liquid cooling for this chip?

Thanks!

I would say around 4.0, most people I know that have it on oc forums, have it around 4.0GHz, but that is with liquid cooling, and they know what they are doing.

what mombo and ram did you get with it?

You need liquid cooling to hit higher overclocks.

With Stage 2, it runs too hot. Anything higher than 3.6GHz, you will need liquid cooling. (Obviously we can get it to post and goto the desktop at even 4.2GHz on air, but, it won't pass our stability test, and you will have a system that overheats down the road with stability issues). In conclusion, 3.6GHz is the best to get a balance between heat, stability, and longevity for your unit.

Don't forget, we have to warranty the unit too for 3 years. If the CPU burns out, Digital Storm pays $1,000.

Warm Regards,
Alex

That seems fair. What I don't really understand is why DS repeatedly steered me away from liquid cooling; I pretty much went all out on this rig, and would have gone the extra mile w/liquid cooling (ticket 194392).

Ah well, stability rules!

I have been saying that liquid will get your better oc speeds since day one somebody didn't agree with me here but I'm glad to see Alex say it also, did they say anything about your 8GB of ram getting in the way of your oc a bit?

as Alex said, liquid cooling will get your higher oc speeds for sure.

Stevew,

Out of curiosity, the person on the phone may just wanted you to save money and/or put it elsewhere where you would see a larger performance boost.

Did you let them know you wanted a high overclock on the QX9770?

Also, no worries, it isn't too late to add liquid cooling in order to get a higher overclock. Just call and state that you have a system in testing and you want it to overclock higher and you are willing to upgrade to liquid cooling.

Cheers,
Alex

Yes you have been saying liquid cooling was the way to go; when I inquired DS expressly said to ignore what other folks were saying.

They didn't mention the ram as a cause of any problems.

Well, it's too late to call them tonight, but I put in the request (double loop for cpu+2 gtx280) via the website customer service request link.

I assume they'll call me shortly after they open tomorrow.

Fun !!!

I didn't agree because you assume it is guaranteed.  Water cooling helps greatly with the heat dissipation

By the way, a 1ghz overclock is easy to obtain, anything over that and it takes a lot of tweaking/testing.

I knew it wasn't guaranteed, but I was somewhat sure that LC would increase the amount of OC. Anyway, I spoke to DS this morning, and asked to upgrade from stage 2 to LC for cpu only. That should help get the qx9770 up to ~4ghz. They hit me for $50 (plus the cost differential for the LC) to do the re-work because the system was already in stage 5 testing, which seems fair.

The last time I tried to make a change on an order from Dell, the company almost went out of business from the convulsions it went through to process the change.

Go DS :)
