I was curious to find out if anyone else had built their system years ago and it still be running great. I think mine is going on 10 years now lol. I got it right before FFXIV came out and the only thing I had to do to it was replace the video card. I haven't had any issues other than that since. I still play everything. I want to upgrade here soon but love the idea that this system is still going strong. Anyone else come close to that many years on the same system? :)

I had a 2010 build I replaced in 2018 after 8 1/2 years. The only thing I had upgraded was I got an SSD. It was still fast, but had begun to struggle a bit with only 6GB of RAM and an ancient GPU on games newer than 2015.
This may sound goofy, but I never upgraded the video because I wait and wait until the AAA games of a few years ago are really inexpensive. I've been doing that so long, I have a backlog of 3-5 year old games I need to get through before I get newer ones. I'm still looking forward to Witcher 3 but I've owned it for a couple of years! Yes. I'm strange, but I rarely pay more than $12 for a game. Steam sales are my life.

Still have my DS Laptop from 2013, but I think the GTX 680M is starting to die. I had a Hailstorm II with 2x 980TIs from around 2016 but since I like to tinker and started the hobby of building my own custom loops that has been retired and pieces donated to friends and family.

You don't know how envious that makes me. Experiencing The Witcher 3 for the first time? .... Magic. It is that good of a game. |

Great stuff. I thought I was the only one. I find myself going on the site and building a bolt and wishing for a few hours and then getting back to real life lol. I'll be forced to once this thing decides it's had enough. I play a ton of Path of Exile and the gpu upgrade really helped there with particle effects so I'm not really struggling with anything so far.

My first DS was back in 2010 and lasted until 2018 when the mobo died an honorable demise - https://www.digitalstorm.com/forums/my-ds-pc-review-tidf10729/ . I upgraded the storage drive, Ram and video card only in that time frame. Got my 2nd DS Feb of 2018 which is a Lumos. https://www.digitalstorm.com/forums/time-for-ds-2-lumos-build-tidf30340/ . I did recently go from 16 GB of RAM (2x8) to 32 GB (2x16) recently as there was a great sale on corsair dominators with great timings and a 3200 speed rating. Figured why not as i probably wont need it but maybe i might in the near future considering the trends in technology. I pulled my 970 from the old machine and put it in here which is holding me over until the 3000 series comes into play. I fully expect this to last at least 8 years and maybe longer since i am using software overclock and not hardware. I just recently bought my 3rd DS machine as this ones for my wife for is anon-gamer which is a lynx. I have nothing but respect and trust with this company as i've never had an issue with the hardware at all. For my wife machine, my only issue is the current state of the world since it's taking a long time to get parts to be built it seems. It's of no fault to DS. I just hope my wife's pc will last long enough as she uses it for work.
Witcher 3 = worth it. I just finished the entire playthrough w/ expansions a few months back. I can see myself going back to that later on in life. |

Witcher 3 was awesome. I want to do that again.
I downloaded a few games that I have on Steam or Origin last night. Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Destiny 2 and I already have Overwatch. I need to find a couple of RTX-enabled games and see just what I bought with this computer. |

My original system was a i5 3570k overclocked to 4.2 GHz Vanquish system from 2013.
I upgraded the ram to 16 GB from the 8 it started with. I upgraded the 120 GB SSD to a 512 GB one. Then moved from the original GTX 670 to a GTX 970 then finally to a GTX 1070. I also had to replace the Hard drive when it failed(seagate). The good news is that I had a western Digital hard drive laying around. |

@ John 18:
I saw before where you appreciated the Dragon Age series. I've played them all. I'm currently playing the Divinity II Dragon Knight Saga. (I told you I have quite a backlog. It's from 2010/2011? An excellent, deep action RPG with graphics that really hold up, where you actually gain the ability to BE the dragon.

I picked up a DA:I game in progress last night and at 1440p Ultra it is gorgeous.
You know we need to form an old farts division of DS players for a MPG. If nothing else we would have fun. |

Well I had to pull the trigger and get a new system. I know there's a long wait time but I'm in no hurry with my current rig running great. I also picked up a couple of Dell S3220DGF to go with. I'm looking forward to it. I'll have to see if I can make this one last even longer lol

Did you not get an NVMe M.2 SSD? They work off the PCIe bus, and are up to 5 times faster than SATA drives. I recommend a small one of those for your OS drive for the extreme speed of primary system scans, and the execution of Windows, browser, and often used apps at top speed. Just sayin'.

Yes! Got the huuuge one. My advice - partition it for Windows and your apps and maintenance software, and you'll have the benefit of super fast system scans. As little as 200GB could be enough, but your mileage may vary. Your games library and other media don't need to scanned very often at all.

Great idea. Never really thought about how monitors worked with the video either so here I've been trying to figure if the Dell S3220DGF with FreeSync 2 HDR and not G-Sync Compatible so of course I have the nvidia card. Do you think that will make any real difference in my gaming? |

To be honest, I'm not sure if it will. My thinking is that if your GPU is fast enough, (and I think yours is) tearing should not be any problem. I see that you can dial back the 165 Hz to 144 Hz just by changing to an HDMI cable. Start with display port at 165Hz native and see how it goes.
If you didn't buy it yet, look at these G-Sync compatibles certified by Nvidia: https://www.windowscentral.com/list-all-nvidia-g-sync-compatible-freesync-monitors Maybe something here catches your fancy?

FWIW I have the LG 27GL850 and have been very pleased with it, right out of the box at 1440p and 144Hz.
I probably should calibrate it since I use it for photography plus see what suggestions the software makes, but I do like it right at default. |
