In the interest of stability and performance, I'm going to remove vista from this rig and go with XP.
I've got XP on an old HP machine sitting on the floor behind me, is it possible to rip the OS from that pile of crap and make an installation disk from it to be used on my ds comp? (I've got the COA/key). If not, I'll just torrent it, but I'd rather go through a legal avenue first. |

It's always an interesting observation of the fallen nature of man that one would ask for a legal way to do something with the intent to do it illegally anyway. Why not just do it illegally and leave the morality out of it. I know, I know, you're not "meaning" it to be this way. You're not "wanting" to be this way and yet, it is and you are.
This is just my personal conviction. What convicts you? I hope you're able to solve your problem. Edited by EdH63 - 24 Feb 2008 at 10:43am |

So, you've got the Key but not the Installation CD? If that is the case, no. Well, maybe if there is an image of the CD on the hard drive, like some cost cutting box builders provide. The problem is that your installed XP is configured to run on "that pile of crap"; not on the DSO machine. So, for example, if you simply removed the HD from "crap" and plugged it into the DSO machine, it might boot but I doubt it. Then there's the whole CD-Key doesn't match your hardware business.
While I applaud your decision to upgrade to XP, for the time being, I think you're going to have to cop a copy of XP some other way. Edited by Bill the Cat - 24 Feb 2008 at 12:00pm |

IMHO, if the copy of XP on "the pile of crap" is legal, and if he stomps on "the pile of crap" so it is not useable, then it is moral to obtain a replacement copy of XP for the new machine any way he can, even if it is technically illegal. Edited by Bill the Cat - 24 Feb 2008 at 12:07pm |

HP like other so called major vendors, setup there sytems with their modifications. With HP that is why their recovery, and the recovery CD's work well on the system its sold with, BUT not any other,
Their back to factory recovery actually works, BUT if you made hardware changes you have to either, restore the old hardware first, or go through h*ll tring to upgrade the software,
They do this in an attempt to minimize confusion in customer service with the general public. Even their new (beautiful looking) Blackbird has limited customiztion, Can't get XP, can't have the bloat-ware removed.

I've helped a few friends cure themselves of Vista.
Let me tell you that Vista does not like to go backwards... you can not simply CD-format to wipe Vista and let XP install. You're going to have to do a clean slick of the drive (and all associated configuration - BIOS, partitions, whatever else is applicable...).
Assuming your disks are SATA, you might need to have the SATA drivers handy during install, also.
Suffice to say, Vista is a bastard that does not want to let go. Unless something has changed in the last four months (last time I formatted a system to go back to XP), it can be a little problematic. One disclaimer - all four systems I've worked on for friends were Dell. Things might be a little more "normal" on a DS rig (without all that Dell-specific software/hardware).

If you are really worried about the licensing issue, send microsoft an email. Tell them you want the license tranferred to a new computer. I did that and the key code worked fine. Probably would have worked fine without contactng them, but kept my wife from thinking we were going to jail.
