What do you guys recommend to keep computers running fast over time? There are tons of programs that claim to do this but i have learned from experience many actually slow down the computer. I know CCleaner is great but is there anything else that should be done to keep it running fast?

Back up your important files and reinstall windows every six months or so, or when you are experiencing massive slowdowns. There's nothing really performance improving like a fresh install.

so true, either backup everything on dvds(which you should do anyway) and reformat when you get bogged down

a wonderful quickfix is a double dose of ccleaner(and its registry cleaner) and defragging

and, turning off virtual ram/paging file I've found also gives somewhat of a performance boost. make sure you have more than enough physical ram first though.

A fresh install is ideal but i'm mostly looking for ways around it because i install tons of programs and its a huge pain to reinstall them. by a double dose do you mean run it twice? What does the paging file even do?

No, you don't need to run it twice

best way is to never have a crash, freeze up, lose power, and to not install extra programs.. all those stupid sidebars, toolbars,. ect slow things down

my double dose i actually meant several times, ccleaner will find new registry problems afrter several runs, so i find it best to run the cleaner with no free space wipe, then the reg cleaner, then back and forth, until nothing new is found, then restart and do it again, then defrag and restart

but yes, as justin said, being a minimalist and staying away from bloatware will keep you running faster longer
