Wanted to upgrade to 3.5 GB RAM (4 GB, but yeah XP 32-bit limitation, no big though, just hoping that having a 768 MB 9600 GSO, and 3.5 GB of RAM doesn't cause games to act funny, and just improves performance, though I DID disable page file system also.)

And even then my ram sticks are 5 yrs old, could use a new batch since I DID receive BSODs about two months ago, that were occuring often after I exit a game, but now ever since they literally stopped being consistent, never happened for awhile now.

BUT that besides the point.

I ordered two of these.

Then a thought occured to me and checked out newegg to verify my realization.  Yep there was a 2 x 2 GB set.  Silly me!

I talked to a representative.  If I refuse to accept the package and have them return it, they'll fully refund me and no restocking fee will occur either.  That's good, but for non overclocking purposes, having 4 slots fully occupied has no difference to having just two sticks right?  I know that in overclocking, less sticks equals better overclock.

Then there's also the fact that if having 4 GB has a negative effect on my performance (unlikely there WAS  a few people that had their game FPS drop and had to remove a stick, but, overall everybody else stated they had no problems, and just had 3.5 GBs to work with).

Then maybe I could just remove 1 stick out of the 4 and only have 3, even if they are dual channel memory kits.

I would just run the new sticks, and keep the old ones as backup, I now have 2 drawers full of "backup".  It happens.         lol  That should give you the best odds of good performance, least problems.

So I shouldn't try to get a single 2 x 2 set?  I'll be fine with having 2 "2 x 1 GB kits"?

lol, so maybe I did not understand. If you ordered  the 2 x 1 I would refuse the order, and order the 2 x 2. for the best possible set up.
It matters what board you have, but if not OC'ing very much all 4 ram slots usually is fine, some boards it just limits you a bit, and/or the NB will run warmer.
either way I see very little difference, as long as you have clearance, the cpu heatsink, ect to fill all 4 slots. Most of my old boards ended up having all 4 filled. lol

Well got the two kits, and everything is working fine and dandy.  So no complaints here.  (Yeah decided not to return them)
