So, I am selling my 2 ATI 5870's, and I wanted to buy the 6970's but looks like there's a delay there and it could be another month or so before we see them. Also, my cards are already about to sell, so I will need some graphics cards to take their place. I was wondering since I use my cards a lot for HT purposes, how much of a drop in movie performance will I have when switching to the gtx 580? Will I notice the difference? This is pretty much aimed at you justin because I remember you talking about how ATI has Nvidia beat in the HT area, and I understand that they still do even with the new cards from some of the things I read.

I do like AMD for HT, infact I am building a HTPC next week, using a 6850.
The GTX 580 can bitstream, unlike the GTX 480, if I remember right, so if that is correct, then a slightly lower quality Blue ray playback would be about the only downside. otherwise the GTX 580 is shaping up to be a very good card.
Still, a very small improvement going to GTX 580's or 6970's gaming wise over your current setup

Hmm, yeah I figured so much, I just thought that maybe I'd go ahead and upgrade for more stressful Dx11 games coming out in 2011, so I'm still debating whether I want to upgrade or not lol I could end my sell early.

Also, I heard some mixed things about the 3rd party 3D drivers for ATI, and was wondering how this plays a factor in 3D gaming. I heard somewhere they don't yet crossfire, Idk if that's true, do you know anything of how well the drivers these companies make perform? Also, sounds like a nice HTPC I remember hearing that there was a lot of new features for the HT uses on the new AMD cards. What kind of setup are you using to make your HTPC? Anyways, I'm just not sure, I kind of want to upgrade, then again part of me would rather save $200-$300 dollars and just skip this generation.

Do what you want, but if I were you I would wait, you just will not see much gain, it will take the next Gen AMD 7XXX, or Nvidia's next gen, the ones with the die shrink, to really give you a big gain in FPS. Yes the 58XX series 3D works, but not very well, it was a "we have 3D to" kind of deal. My new HTPC, basics are, Win 7 64bit, Intel 650 CPU, overclocked to 4.5Ghz, Noctua D14 cooler, 4Gb 2400Mhz RAM, Vertex 2 90Gb SSD ($140 pre-black friaday sale, could not pass up Hate HDMI, but no sound card, so should be able to bisteam master audio to the receiver. should sound great... Sad part, this is a setup for the wifes workout room.

Well with the 58xx series you say 3D isn't that good, but is there any difference with the 6xxx series? I mean I know the 3D software comes from 3rd party sources like iz3d or whatever they're called and some other places. But, will there be a difference between the series. Also, more on it not working very well, is it in the appearance? Or just in performance such as frame rates and such. Also, that's a beastly HTPC haha I wouldn't of passed up on the ssd either lolz. But, one thing, in the wife's workout room? Haha what kind of workout involves top line media interaction?
Is that not your main HT setup? lol.. But yeah, I'm thinking about upgrading because I will be doing a lot of 3D gaming, but then again if its still good enough on my current cards I will pass on it, is the 3D performance with the 58xx cards that bad?

3D wise, I believe the 5xxx and 6xxx series are the same.
I have witnessed so very little 3D gaming, that I am in no way able to give out any good info.
I would try out you existing setup first, won't cost anything extra to try.
Wish Bender was around to add his input to this 3D gaming subject. Yes this HTPC is just for her workout room, not the main setup...

Yeah I got you, well being that my 3D tv is one that is sitting in the living room at my house, an 82" Mitsubishi 738
, and I'm here at my college apartment with my 60hz monitor and 42" Vizio, it won't be till my 34 day Christmas break after the 14th in December that I get to try out the 3D. And, I figured that if the 3D sucked with my AMD cards around then it might be harder to get some good money for them then, but then again you never know. Yes, it would help if !ender could come lend some help on the 3D gaming subject, or anyone knowledgeable that is that has experienced 3D using 3rd party drivers with an ATI/AMD card. Haha, well I guess your right about the workout room, maybe she will get caught up in the beauty of a show and extend those workouts lolz. Just makes me wonder though, if that's the htpc for the workout room, then what do you have for your real entertainment room :p haha. |

![]() That's the joke, he hates the idea of 3D gaming, thinks it is a passing fad. Having never seen it myself, I'm on the fence about it. But unless they can start really dropping prices on doing it, it just may well become a passing fad because of it. |

Haha true true, I do remember some posts now with !ender saying such things lol it just didn't register. Yeah, well the only true affordable route right now is DLP, they've been making 3DTV's for a while now. I mean you can pick you up a 73" 3DTV for $1,500. That's pretty nice, but most people won't go this route because the flat screen is in right now. Hell I'll go where I can get my money's worth, and a bigger beautiful picture at that just makes a heck of a deal. However, I haven't experienced 3D at home either yet, and Idk how I'm going to feel about it. I look forward to the days to where we get a true 3D and not just a trick of the eyes lol.
