Guys ( and girls),

I don't quite understand the gpu selection.

Assume I'm going to use a 3930 CPU, X79 extreme mobo, 16GB 1600 RAM, 1200W PSU and a single Dell U3011 at 2560X1600 res. I want to play any game at ultra levels. I think I'm hearing 3X570 2.5GB is better than 2X580 3GB for a similar price. I think I'm told that will keep my FPS at 60 for even 2033.

So in 2 years I'm going to have to change my GPUs out for something newer.
Question is, what changed? Do new games require more GPU speed, power, or VRAM to get me back to 60 FPS at same res? Is 2X580 3GB a better choice now, so I only have to add another 580 3GB in 2 years to get back 60 FPS?

I know I can wait for 670/680? cards to come out in April but I could wait beyond that for something else and it would be good to move ahead.

tri sli 570 should keep you above 60fps average.

what changed? try playing metro at your res with tri sli 275/285 and tell me how your performance is, keep in mind one 570 is equal to dual sli 285/275. You will notice that a. you can't play in dx11 so you misout on all the goodies it has, and b. you are not gonna be doing that great.

Games change, new ones come out, and they have higher requierments.

if you gonna add a gpu it should be within a year, in 2 years you won't find a 580/570, and even if you did its price would be higher then new gpus and it would have much less performance then new gpus.

find me a 285 gtx, if you do it will be for $385, now how much is a 570? $330, so the 570 has twice the power and cost less, does it make sense for anybody to add a 285 now? NO.

Yes you can keep waiting for newer stuff till you are 90 years old, but we are not talking about that, we are talking about waiting 2 months so you get the most on gpus for your money.

Much like DST said it's just the standard of the industry. Developers have been making games for a long time that exceed the capabilities of the current hardware. Remember when Crysis first came out? It required some really, really powerful systems in order to play it with out the graphics turned way down.

Metro 2033 is similar to that but not as bad. Even at a reasonable 1920x1080 resolution there is no single GPU on the market that can max it out and maintain above 60fps. Even the current "best" single GPU the 7970 can't max it out at 1920x1080. It's important to remember that this is a game that came out in 2010, almost two full years before the 7970 was available.

Game quality for a very long time has exceeded the hardware capabilities of the average system. When you have games being released that exceed the current technology at the time you will almost always be playing catch up so upgrading you GPU(s) every two years really is needed to stay current with the games being released.

Thanks for the response, I think I'm understanding.Oops

It's an interesting balancing act, that of bang for buck. The latest and greatest is overkill, three years or less is underkill, and the sweet spot in the middle is a moving target. I appreciate your willingness to explain it to us newbies.

Another couple of questions came up re tri sli vs.sli.

Air cooling - If you use tri sli then your cards have to be close together. The EVGA side fans wouldn't have much room to get air so do you end up overheating two of them? With sli you could space them apart to alleviate the problem.

Optional HAFX top fan - On another forum someone mentioned that by adding the second top fan you end up actually pulling a negative pressure on the case. With the EVGA style gpu cards trying to exhaust to the outside could that possibly make the gpu cooling worse?

Thanks in advance

No you won't endup with 2 of them over heating, they may have little higher load temps but all 3 will endup below 85c which is what we are looking for, the big factore as to overheat is your room temp.

The top fan is there to help with airflow, its not gonna hurt it, nor will it make any cooling worst, we are not just worried about cpu and gpu temps being ok, we want the whole case to have good temps.

we control the gpu temps with the gpus's fans, they are the biggest factor next to room temp for gpus.
