If anyone would look at my current configuration and give their opinions I would be thankful. Feel free to change anything as long as it stays in my budget.
Budget: [No more then $2,000 at the moment. I do not plan on spending a huge amount of money on a computer I can upgrade in the future.] Expectations: [I expect my rig to run Battlefield 3 and Skyrim with ease. I currently have the NVIDIA Geforce GTX 580 selected and I think this card will do the trick.] Usage: [I plan on using this computer for gaming more than anything. I do not want multiple monitors for peripheral vision or 3D or anything like that.] Special Needs: [I have no special needs for this. I do want it to run cool and fairly quiet, but i do not want to spend too much money on sub=zero cooling or anything like that.] Saved Ticket #: [668430] Specifications: [Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master 942 HAF X Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 (Intel Z68 Chipset) (Features Intel Quick Sync Technology) System Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 800W Corsair GS (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Seagate Barracuda (7200 RPM) (16MB Cache) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB (Includes PhysX) (Overclocked EVGA 015-P3-1582-BR) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Corsair H80 Liquid CPU Cooler (High-Performance Edition) H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Red) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: HailStorm & 950Si Case Only: Video Card(s) Area: Drill and Mount a Side Window 120mm Fan Blow-Hole Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Standard Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 Automatic Overclocking Boost Video Card: FREE: Yes, Overclock the video card(s) as much as possible with complete stability Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: FREE: Yes, Disable and tweak all of the non-crucial services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: Logitech 2 Piece (Black Edition) Amplified Speaker Set Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Medium) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty ] Edited by hayesboys3 - 25 Mar 2012 at 5:35pm |

Welcome to the forums hayesboys3!
Let's have a look... If you have one 580, I assume the one in the configuration is for an SLI setup? Otherwise you can select the "I will install my own video cards" option. If you want to SLI, your single monitor should be capable of 1080p resolution. It seems kinda moot to point this out, but I myself am stuck at 1680x1050 for a while =( If you plan to run SLI, you'll see some good returns using a bigger PSU, namely the Corsair 1050HX. It comes with a 7-year manufacture warranty and is 80+ silver-rated, so some nice energy savings there. If you're not SLIing, the Corsair 750HX is a bit of a better PSU than the 800W one you have selected, with the same warranty, but it carries a bit more of a pricetag too. Without any OC, the H80 water cooler is overkill for the 2500K. The Corsair A70 is a very good budget option, or for a little more the Noctua DH-N14 or Phanteks PH-TC14PE coolers are the best air options out there. I myself favor the Noctua a little more as the reviews I've seen paint it as the quieter of the two. If you're set on the closed-loop water cooling, the Corsair H100 is typically regarded as both quieter and more effective than the H80, just for the same price increase as the aforementioned air coolers. The side-drilled window is not available for the case you have selected, and the HAF X already has a side-mounted fan anyway. So no need for that! With the cooling you have, or the air/water cooling suggested, you could get up to the Stage 2 OC on the CPU. If you don't intend for the chip to OC at all, the stock cooling for the i5/i7 is rather effective and, more importantly for a budget, included in the price of the CPU. If you opt to OC, be sure to add in the comments section to not exceed a vcore of 1.4. Overclocking your video cards is typically regarded as a waste. For a 3-5 fps increase, you'll be shortening the life of your card(s), and so that's typically not regarded as effective. I would personally recommend against the Trend Micro IS package you have selected, as there are many very good free alternatives for antivirus out there (Avast, MSE, to name a couple), and the Windows Firewall is actually very good in Windows 7. If the box were running XP, then you could maybe make a case for it, but still, for budget concerns, you don't need a paid internet security suite. Speakers and sound systems in general are almost latin to me, so I'll leave that to someone more knowledgeable, but I would imagine another $15 for a 2.1 setup would be worth it for the extra bass fidelity you'd get from a subwoofer. Free t-shirt, check! lol With no SLI and no CPU OC, you're looking at $1240. Doing SLI and OC to Stage 2, the price jumps to $2040. The majority of that $800 difference is the video card price, at $515. |

I've been out of the loop for a while now, so you'll likely get some better advice from the other guys, but here's what I think:
(1) Never buy an overclocked card. You can do it yourself easily, and they probably charge more for it. Not sure if DS has a non-overclocked 580 though. Try expert mode to check. (2) Chassis mod is probably an error? It doesn't work with that case, and even if it did I think you could spend your money better. (3) Get your speakers somewhere else. Granted, it's only 12 dollars, but they're likely not too good. (4) Get the overclock on the processor, not the turbo boost. Unless you can do it yourself. It's worth it. (5) Personally, I'd get the NH-d14 over the corsair cooler. (6) I'd get a different virus protection. Probably E-set, but I'm out of the loop on this as well. (7) I'd also go with a 750HX over the 800GS power supply. As for the 580 vs 570 thing, I really couldn't say. Someone else should be able to help with that. Edited by sdelu - 25 Mar 2012 at 6:15pm |

Pst, the OP meant that was the card he's selecting under customize, not a card he already owns. If all you are going to play is Battlefield and Skyrim, you don't need the 580. The 560 will play Skyrim on Ultra. (I'm not sure about Battlefield, but I imagine close to Ultra.) Also like Kenage said, if you aren't overclocking or dual-screening or anything else, the water cooling isn't necessary at all, so if you wanted to save some huge bucks, thats another good way to do it. |

The A70 cpu cooler is gone. The D14 or Phantek are great options.
The gtx 560 will play Skyrim on Ultra, unless you add lots of texture and sound mods. For BF3, the 560 will play some maps on High and some om Medium like Caspain Border, where there is tons going on and distance rendering. Post what size monitor and resolution you game with. Makes lots of difference in picking the gpu.

Another option for your budget is the ODE level 1. Very good gaming for the price.
Or, this modified dreadnought level 2 with better case, power supply and cpu cooler over the ODE 1. This custom config will play games at the same performance as the ODE 1, just has better parts. I changed mobo to LE to save money. The Le can't sli, 2x gpu or do stage 2 overclocking but with the better psu over the ODE 1 allows future gpu upgrade more easily. I changed gtx 580 to gtx 570. The difference in gaming is very little. Keep in mind in a month or two new GTX 660, 650 comparable to the older 570/580's are suppose to be released. But the 570 is a great card. The single 570 or 580 will play at 1920x1080 resolution BF3 on high with most maps, and Skyrim on ultra. For a monitor, we recommend the Dell UltraSharps, like the U2312HM, for example. Great gaming monitor. More money but better than the 21.5 " in config builder. Wait for sales. Check it out and Good Luck
