Hello!
Here is my configuration so far for a gaming only pc.
Other than advice on everything, I have two fairly specific questions.
What is the actual difference in game performance between 4gb ram, and 8gb ram. I do not multitask with my pc, I just play one game at a time. Essentially I am asking if the 8gb is a waste of money or not.
PSU: is the 750w digital storm psu good for my configuration? I am paranoid about psu issues from my last pc.
As far as I have learned, my cpu and gpu are both very overclock friendly, and Digital storm does that for free, and that seems awesome to me.
Thanks for any help!

What is the size of the monitor you gonna be gaming on?
more ram = more multitasking, so for only one game and not other apps running, 4GB is more then enough, plus you can always add ram easy. for psu go with corsair 750w, it has its own 5 year warranty and you know what you are getting. we need to change some things, as soon as I know the res you plan on gaming, I can figure a few things out for you. |

I hve a 30" dell monitor, so I can play games at 2500x1600 but i do not insist on doing that. I usually start at that resolution and lower it if a particular game feels slower.

Don't waste your money on Corsair Dominator memory for a gaming only rig, almost zero gains to be had at all over standard DS Certified memory. In that same vein, I don't know why you're wasting so much money on all those other frivolous things when you should be getting more GPU muscle instead. You have a lot of pixels to push for that 2560x1600 monitor, after all.

Thanks for the tip on the ram!
Can you be more specific about what is frivolous in the configuration?
I thought the 6950 overclocked was powerful for gaming.

Well like, the McAfee and APC Surge Protector for starters. Before I thought I read that as an APC UPS, which would of been silly to spend so much on for a gaming rig. A surge protector isn't bad, but you could get one cheaper from elsewhere besides DS, and get one exactly suited for your needs. McAfee on the other hand.. well, it can just die in a fire for all I care, waste of money. Then there's little things like the Corsair PSU, Corsair memory, 1TB HDD, etc.
Budget card at this point. ATI/AMD decided to be jackasses and change their naming scheme, a 6950 is only as strong as an old 5870, and the 6970 is only as strong as a GTX 570, but they're both more expensive so what's the point? Overall if your budget is around $1800 I'd go with something more like this: Ticket #481361, Price: $1724 Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Pro (Intel P67 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Digital Storm Certified (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Recommended) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (1TB Hitachi/Seagate (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Overclock the processor between 3.6GHz to 3.9GHz Boost Video Card: FREE: Yes, Overclock the video card(s) as much as possible with complete stability Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: FREE: Hot-selling game with a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 or above graphics card Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty Or if your budget is actually higher and you can manage around $2200, I'd even move up to a 1000w PSU and get dual SLI 570s. It's the only way you'd be able to come close to maxing a lot of games at that resolution. |

I really like the single gpu config you posted. $1800 is about my limit, so no dual gpu for me.
I have a couple of questions:
I have an upgrade windows 7 cd, so I could save $60 by getting Vista and then upgrading it to win 7. Is there any reason that would be unwise?
So sell me on the 570 gpu vs the 6970. The 570 costs less I see, so bang for the buck the 570 is best?
I was under the assumption that the 6970 was more power efficient, and better at the higest resolutions (that I would dabble with, but not insist on using)
Perhaps the nvidia card has better drivers?
Thanks! Edited by Bill47 - 31 Jan 2011 at 8:45am |

I don't like upgrading, IMO if you are getting a new os, then just do fresh install of the new OS.
if you crankup aa at higher settings, you might need more vram which 6970 has but you should not really notice the difference in aa at higher res, the 570 cost less and gives you the same performance, so if you want high aa at the higher res then go with 6970 but you will be paying more. its really more of a preference at your res if you take away the aa. |

Thanks!
So the power consumption is a non issue?
Now should I avoid the sandy bridge and get a different processor? if so, which one?

power usage was high with 480/470, the 580/570 don't use as much power, IMO with the 6970 vs 570, power is not an issue.
Wait for the fix for SB then get SB. |
