Good choice in HDD'S you just have them backwards. use the Velociraptor as ur primary HD and use the 500GB as ur personal file HDD. you deffinatly want your OS  to run on the faster hd , which in this case is the VR.

Overclocked CPU + 3 overclocked 280s will require dual loop, which will up the price of your rig by a lot. Either go for that, or downgrade just to have CPU liquid cooled and tweak your GPUs fan speed by yourself.

With overclocked cpu, memory and 3x GPUs you will need a 1200W PSU.

Also, with 4 gigs of ram you will need 64 bit OS.

And as far as opinions go, 3x 280s is a waste of money ATM. Get yourself a more stable mobo (going to get flamed for this) and go w/ dual xfire ati 4780x2. Better performance, and you dont need a loud 1200W PSU to power up your rig. You could save money by getting OCZ 1600mhz or 1333mhz ram instead of 1800mhz, and invest it in getting a 150g/300g/500g HD setup

loud 1200w psu?

I recently replaced my 850w with a 1200w and i can't tell the difference.  seems pretty quiet.. haha.

3x 280 GTX is probably overkill- would love to know what Costone thinks after using his machine, gaming wise of course.

I dont recommend the QX6850s. They are fairly out of date. If you cant afford the newer QX chips then youll actually be better of with the Q9550 or above or since you said gaming only, an E8600. In both reguards those chips (Q9550+ E8600) will be faster anyways then the QX6850.

E8500@ 4.03Ghz
XFX 790i Ultra
1000W Corsair HX
2 280 GTX EVGA FTW
4GB OCZ Reaper 1800Mhz
250-80-300GB VR HD
Logitech Z-2300 2.1 Speakers
Asus Xonar 7.1

Examples:

Here is Crysis, simliar get ups only difference is the CPUs. Via tomshardware. Obviously crysis is a game that only programed for 2 or less cores, which means its all about the speed of the cores then the number of the cores. Notice where the QX6850 lies...

Direct power comparision, lets see the vantage CPU scores: The quads win this easy, but even so, notice the new line of quads Q9--- line actually beat the QX6850.

Supreme commander--A game that IS programed to handle 4+ cores:

Notice your QX is up there, but its still behind the Q9550

E8500@ 4.03Ghz
XFX 790i Ultra
1000W Corsair HX
2 280 GTX EVGA FTW
4GB OCZ Reaper 1800Mhz
250-80-300GB VR HD
Logitech Z-2300 2.1 Speakers
Asus Xonar 7.1
