do you not have anything specific in what you want in the laptop?
battery life over performance or vice versa.

the seventeen inch is like 50 dollars more. need to specify more. are you looking more for battery life or GPU?

primarily what are you going to be using it more for? you need to say these things so that we can see what to do.

the x series opposed to the xm. can support up to sixteen gigabytes of ram. you can ask DS to add a blu-ray drive or the RAM etc.

I own a digital storm laptop, 17". Works great for gaming and I've had no problems with it for going on 2 1/2 years now. Just so you know, however, and this is probably universal to all larger laptops, not just DS laptops, the laptop is very noisy. I mention this because my first semester of law school I used my laptop for taking notes in class, and it was so loud that it was actually disruptive to other students around me, and I even had a professor make a comment.

The next semester I ended up buying a $280 netbook for note taking, and kept the laptop at home where I could transfer my notes and write my papers and what not.

I don't regret my purchase at all, I travel quite a bit, especially during the summer when I am working for different firms and want to game on the go. DS makes a fantastic product and I cannot recommend them enough, I'm going to be buying a brand new desktop from them when SWTOR gets a release date.

If, however, you are intending to take your laptop to class for note taking, be aware that it will be loud.

Thanks for the advice, i was probably going to buy something along the lines a xoom for classes that didn't require the power of a laptop.

It only gets loud, when you play games on it. If you're just using microsoft word and the internet, it's just noticeable. The fan throttles between silent and 20% fan speed. It depends on the environment of the classroom you are in. If your classroom has 80% of the students taking notes by pen or pencil, then they see it as distracting, but they won't be able to hear it if the classroom has 50% of the students taking notes by pen or pencil and the other 50% with a laptop.

My experience is different than yours I guess.

I would run mine on low power settings with Norton on silent mode, and mine still ran loud. It was not always noticeable, but even simple tasks would cause it to "rev" up some times to the point that it could be heard all the way across the room.

Also, I'm not talking about a small room, I'm talking about a law classroom that fits 50+ people. We had, at most, 2-3 people taking notes with 40+ laptops running, and mine would dwarf the others in noise. I'd say 60% were using Macs, and the others were using non-gaming laptops or netbooks. Mine was the only gaming laptop I know of.

I'm glad your laptop runs quieter, maybe the 15" runs quieter or perhaps the newer models are quieter than my 2+ year old 17". My X17 got very loud during class even when it was not connected to the net and running only Word. It's not a defect in the machine, it's just the nature of it, which is why I gave him a heads up. It seems moot anyways since he's not planning on using it in class.
