Topic: I need help with Windows 7 64bit. Posted: 30 Dec 2010 at 5:59pm |
a week ago. I updated Windows 7. restart my computer. After that I went back to control panel and went to see if I needed to get anymore updates. What I saw was, automatic updates turned on...but when I click "check for updates" I get this error message. "Windows cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer"
I restart nothing, I go online and look for solutions, instead I just decided to reformat. So, I reformatted my computer yesterday, re-updated my win. 7. I am getting the same issue. I am not sure what to do, I am computer stupid *insert I'm with Stupid Smiley here* not sure what information you guys need to help me or if I can even be helped. But I figured this is the place to come to. Thanks for any help in advance because I am stumped and very frustrated :D Edited by Spetsnaz - 30 Dec 2010 at 6:00pm |

right click my computer>manage>services and applications>services>here locate automatic update service and see if its running, if its not, right click it>properties>here start the service and set the startup type from the drop down menu to "automatic".
tho I have a feeling you won't be able to start the service. |

I found Windows updates. (Did not see Automatic Update Service, so I figured Windows Update was the same thing)
it was like this. Service Status: Stopped (I left it as is) Startup was: Automatic (Delayed Start) I set it to automatic. UPDATE* If I try to Start the service it gives me this error: Windows Could Not Start the update service on this computer. Error: 0x80070057 this is the same problem I had before I reformatted. I updated my computer with some new update, and it gives me this garbage. Edited by Spetsnaz - 30 Dec 2010 at 7:11pm |

msconfig and
1. in services tab: a. check "hide all microsoft services" b. then hit "disable all" 2. in startup tab, hit "disable all" 3. reboot, now see if you can update or start the update service. |

I did as you said.
No luck. Still unable to update. an army buddy of mine thinks the Teamspeak issue is because of windows Framework is corrupted or missing (maybe this helps you?) MSN error..I have no idea. *UPDATE* I think the MSN windows Live Messenger Connectivity problem and the windows live update connection problem are related. Not sure how or why, but maybe that will spark some clues for you. I also have screenshots of everything, I can put them here if you feel they will help? Edited by Spetsnaz - 31 Dec 2010 at 1:42am |

Open the Windows Update troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, click Fix problems with Windows Update.
tell me if that helps or not. what is your av and as? Edited by DST4ME - 31 Dec 2010 at 2:54am |

Did that it. It says "Troubleshooter could not identify the problem"
under details it says: Issues Found - Searching for updates failed Searching For Updates Failed - Windows Update encountered and error searching for updates online and then came up with a diagnostics log that when I tried to open was just a bunch of "Y's" (Encrypted?) COLLECTION INFORMATION COMP NAME: Robert - PC Windows Vers: 6.1 Architecture: amd 64 Time: Friday Dec. 31 2:10 AM PUBLISHER DETAILS WINDOWS NETWORK DIAGNOSTICS DETECTS PROBLEMS WITH NETWORK CONNECTIVITY package vers. 1.0 publisher: Microsoft (nazi)windows Windows Update Troubleshoot problems preventing windows update from working Package vers: 1.0 Publisher: Microsoft windows Windows Update Troubleshoot problems preventing windows update from working Package Version: 1.0 Pub: Microsoft Corp. I did not mention much of the last Network config file or diagnostics due to possible privacy issues, I could email or something if you feel it is important. And sorry, I do not know what av and as is? or what it means? Could you explain or tell me how to get the information for you? I also emailed Microsoft asking them about this issue. And when I first had this issue (before the reformat) I had already contacted DS tech support, and hence did the reformat because he thought the Win. 7 files had gotten corrupted. At this point I am prepared to give my computer a viking funeral and attend group therapy for computer error ragers. |

lol you give up too easy, have some patience, you will figure it out.
av = anti virus as = anti spyware it is strange that you have this issue after a reinstall, you sure it was a reinstall and not a repair install? Edited by DST4ME - 31 Dec 2010 at 3:34am |

Nah, just need to add some humor here and there to prevent me from punching the desk anymore :D
AV: I use AVAST free, (used to use AVG Free as well but uninstalled it months before this issue) AS: the Microsoft Security Essentials, AVAST has its own thing, and that is, since I did a clean re-install...I did not install any others as of recently. I believe I made an idiotic choice of wording. I contacted DS Tech support when I first encountered this issue. They told me to use the image disk they provided me, that is what I used. I suggested a reformat, they told me that the image disk would work just as well and that it just sounds like some Win. 7 files got corrupted with a new update. In short: used image disk, it erased all my stuff, was happy for a total of 12 hours till win. 7 updated itself completely and I got this...again... Edited by Spetsnaz - 31 Dec 2010 at 3:40am |

I see in that case I think that maybe that install on the disk is corrupted, try a fresh install instead, before you do anything, update windows.
before you do that, try uninstalling your av/as and see if you have any luck with starting the windows update service. we can always try a repair before a reinstall. Edited by DST4ME - 31 Dec 2010 at 3:46am |

That would be the case, I get time off, I get the computer gypsy curse.
I uninstalled my AV no luck. I suppose clean install of windows and a lot of late night sobbing are in store for me. Then it will work right before I am finished with holiday. Now if I do a full reformat. Does that mess with my overclock settings for my RAM or CPU? if I use the win. 7 disc they gave me...which is what they based the image disc off of. Doesn't that mean the Win. 7 disc is corrupted to? So I am kind of doomed all around?! :O Edited by Spetsnaz - 31 Dec 2010 at 3:58am |

It does not mean that the dvd is corrupt also.
lets do one more thing if you don't mind: run Malwarebytes and see if it finds anything, make sure its upto date before you do the scan. |

Oh okay, I hope you are right..because if they are all corrupted that would be very very depressing.
And sure thing. Doing it now. I will update this reply once it is finished. *UPDATE* did a quick scan..found nothing. Doing deep full system scan, halfway done, still nothing. Edited by Spetsnaz - 31 Dec 2010 at 4:21am |

ok if it finds nothing, let me know if you want to try a repair or a reinstall, repair will keep your user account and apps and etc, you will only need to reinstall drivers, a reinstall is a fresh install.

Its upto you, I hate reinstalling all apps and etc myself, so I alway try repair first, cause that way there is much less to install and set. But a clean install with give you a fresh install, so its up to you, we could go thru repair and still have the problem and endup doing a clean install anyways, just fyi.

well with the changing off all these controls, no anti-virus or anything pops up at startup anyway :P
my only question is, a fresh install won't mess with my RAM and CPU overclock settings, and whatever else they may have played around with in the lab? |

Oh sorry I forgot to answer that, the oc for the cpu is in the bios, so it won't be messed with, we are just erasing HDD and reinstalling win7 on it, as I mentioned you will need to reinstall your drivers for mobo/gpu/sound card and any other extra hardware you might have that is using the pci slot.

Okay, I read the walkthrough, it helped, only question is. When I get the hard drive partition. I am assuming there is a delete button to erase what is currently on it?
and the RAM OC is in the bios as well? it is going on 4 AM here in cold Chicago, so I will just do a complete reformat when I wake up. |

I reformatted. So far, so good. Give it another 24 hours.
I got a list of things to do from Microsoft in case this ever happens again. I am going to post them for everyone, just in case someone else has this problem. I haven't tried these steps, but maybe it will do the world some good. From
the case log, I understand that updates failed to install due to the
error 0x80070057. If there has been any misunderstanding, please let me
know.
I fully understand the inconvenience
you have experienced. We will work together to resolve this issue
through the course of the case.
This issue can occur if one of the following factors is true:
1. Corrupted Windows Update temporary folder.
2. A Windows Update component is not working.
3. A system file is not working.
We can refer to the following steps to test our issue.
Suggestions 1: Rename the Windows Update temporary folders:
====================================
1. Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:
net stop wuauserv
net stop CryptSvc
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sold.old
net start CryptSvc
net start wuauserv
pause
3. After pasting the above commands,
please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to
save the file. Type "rename.bat" as the file name and save it to the
Desktop.
4. Return to the Desktop, right click the rename.bat file and choose "Run as administrator".
5. You will see a DOS-like window processing.
Now try Windows Update to see if the
issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved
it. If not, please proceed to the next step.
Suggestion 2: Reset Windows Update Components
================================
1. Access the link http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683
2. Click "Fix this problem" link and click "Run" in the "File Download" dialog box.
3. Follow the steps in this wizard.
Now try Windows Update to see if the
issue has been resolved. Please let us know if this step has resolved
it. If not, please proceed to the next step.
Suggestions 3: Run the System Update Readiness Tool
==================================
1. Please download the System Update Readiness Tool from the link below according to the System Type:
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 64-bit
2. Double click downloaded file to run the System Update Readiness Tool.
Let's now restart the computer and
check if Windows Update works. If the issue persists, please collect the
following information for further research.
How to capture a screenshot if an error message is received
===========================
1. Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard.
2. Click "Start", type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter.
3. In the Paint program, click "Edit", click "Paste". Then click "File", and click "Save".
4. The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot".
5. Make sure "JPEG
(*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box,
click "Desktop" on the left pane and then click "Save".
Please send this saved JPEG file to my email account at [email protected]
How to collect the System Information
===========================
The System Information can provide us
with more information about the current status of the system. I would
like to check it for you. Please send it to me using the following
steps:
1. Click "Start", type "MSINFO32" in the Search Bar and press Enter to start System Information.
2. On the popup window, on the menu
bar, click "File", and click "Save", type a file name and then choose
NFO as "Save as type", click "Desktop" on the left pane, and click
"Save".
Please send it as an attachment to
[email protected]. If the file is too large to be sent,
please right-click on the exported file, choose "Send To" ->
"Compressed (zipped) Folder", and then send the zip file
to [email protected] for further research.
How to collect the WindowsUpdate.log file
===========================
1. Click "Start", type
"WindowsUpdate.log" (without the quotes) in the Search Bar and Press
Enter. We will see a file named "WindowsUpdate.log"
2. Now click "File" and then click "Save As".
3. From the left panel, click "Desktop" and click "Save".
The file will be saved to your Desktop. Please send the file as an attachment in an email to [email protected].
Note: When attaching files to emails,
the process will vary depending on the email application being used.
Most applications will provide you with either an "Attach" button or a
Paper Clip Icon to click in order to attach
a file. After clicking this button/icon you must browse to the file you
wish to attach and select it by either double clicking it or clicking it
once and then clicking on the "Attach" button. Edited by Spetsnaz - 31 Dec 2010 at 7:59pm |

Yeah, i am going to try those fixes now. My computer-illiterate mind thinks it has something to do with that Framework update. The only errors my registry cleaner has found with this problem had to deal with the Framework MISSING DLL or something, it happens after I download the bloody thing.
None the less. I am doing those steps. If these steps don't work, I will contact DS, and see if they think it is the HDD or OC. Edited by Spetsnaz - 31 Dec 2010 at 8:13pm |

I have noticed I get this problem after installing ----- Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems (KB2160841)
and then everytime I have gotten this problem I'd run a registry cleaner and there would be 4-6 problems with Windows framework missing DLL. But yes this has been an ongoing pattern with each problem, I just notified Microsoft. however, this time I restarted my computer and it connected to windows update again. Now it just keeps giving me a message that, "updates failed to install" so now it is different. Edited by Spetsnaz - 31 Dec 2010 at 8:35pm |
