Need some real help...plan on using this for school and gaming when I can. I really only see myself playing WoW and Diablo III if it ever comes out. Like the price point of AMD and the functionality of the Geforce 460...but do I need two cards or are the other options. Also is it ok to mix the Nvidia cards with AMD? I dont know if I would be better off with a Radeon GPU. Please give me some feedback and thanks.

- AMD is cheaper for stock price, worse for total performance when pushed to its limits
- 460 is last gen tech, and that build is somewhat badly optimized. Dragoon's build makes room for a 570, which is current gen and a step up from the 460's consumer range. - nVidia cards never mix with AMD. They don't function together. Period. There are ways around it, but you don't look like the person who would be interested in tinkering with such technology, heh. Check out dragoon's build, it's great. Only thing I'm sort of wondering though is whether the 570 is overkill or not...could be put towards a SSD if it was. |

lol here is one $150 cheaper and with corsair psu that has its own 5 year warranty, and a 2600k cpu and $10 cheaper then dragoons, tho mine has the 560, but for wow its enough, and you can always oc it to get around the same performance of a 570:

Thanks everyone for the input so far. I am purchasing in the next week and appreciate all the information. Based of what I have gotten back so far I am leaning towards the 2500 and a better, single video card.
Another question...do I just spend the money now on an SSD and put in my own data hard drive when the system comes? My thought is that I have DS build it, go buy the hard drive myself and put it in when the system shows up. Might save a little bit of money that way. Funny that there is no real support for AMD, it does seem to get good reviews and I have read a couple places that it is even better for gaming. |

You got some bad info/reviews, clock for clock intel does much better now in days, there was a time when amd was competing in performance, but with the current platform, amd is behind in everything.
as for getting the HDD/ssd, I would get the HDD now as I mentioned and drop in a gen3 intel ssd myself later, that way you get a bigger faster drive for the same price or less. ok 2500k with better gpu, just keep in mind, the cpu is the brain of your pc, and its easier to upgrade gpu then it is to do so with cpu for somebody who has never done it, which is why I recommended the 2600K, today their performance might be the same but I can't say that this will hold true in a year or two, more games coming out are supporting more cores/threads and so are apps, but like I said if you still want the 2500K with better gpu then here you go: Here you go Ticket# 496086 --- $1534 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 (Intel P67 Chipset) (New & Improved B3 Revision Without SATA 3G Issue) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital/Seagate/Hitachi/Samsung (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Overclock the processor between 3.6GHz to 3.9GHz Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty Also like to point out that in fsp games, the 560 is like 6 to 12 fps behind the 570, with a good oc you can get those fps with a 560, for wow I doubt you will be able to tell the difference between 560/570. |

DST4ME, thanks for the continued help with this. I have other questions regarding motherboards and also cases. I know I keep throwing in options that are running my budget above and beyond but is it important to somehow work in a upgraded motherboard? Also, it seems like the vast majority of builds use the HAF cases. I know others get as good or better reviews so what is driving the majority of buids having HAF cases?

For the price HAF (High Air Flow) case has the best airflow, specially the haf x with the added fan, gives you 4 x 200mm fans, for great airflow IMO, that is why many use it and recommend it.
Now what is the deal with the upgraded montherboard, what are you trying to get out of a more expensive motherboard? if its something specific you can tell me and I can see what is the best way to get it, for example if you told me you want a mobo that can do sli, we could get that mobo, but you would also need to upgrade the psu, cause you can't do sli if the psu can't pull what you need. |

That makes sense on the cases.
As far as the motherboard I am just trying to build in longevity and function...as I understand a better board makes everything else work better. And in the case of a Sabertoooth I get better standard audio. |

response time and contrast ratio are bs numbers, never pay attention to them.
ok so your res is 1920 x 1080, very good thats not change too much in our config, unless you want to able to do sli. as for mobo you are kind of right and not, the quality of the mobo is not that different that you would say for example that the sabertooth is better in quality. also correct me if I'm wrong but the p8p67 has better/same audio: p8p67 audio: sabertooth audio: Edited by DST4ME - 09 Mar 2011 at 6:29pm |
