As a newb, I have no idea how to "inspect" my computer, or in order words, check to see if the computer behaves exactly as it should.

So....please provide me with a checklist of what i should do to check my computer so i can return to DSO IF anything is wrong...

FOr example:

1. When i first receive it, what should i do/pay attention to in order to make sure no "hardware" is "loose" (keep in mind i have no intention to unplug + replug everything)

2. After i first turn it on, should i install my AV immdiately?

3. After i first turn it on, what kind of program should i get to see/monitor how hot the computer is (what about how hot the video card is?)

4. What kind of program should i get to stress test my computer ? (i only have warcraft 3 - frozen throne, so any high end games to test its capabilities i don't have)

5. These are all i can think of, but seriously, what do i need to do to "discover" if my computer is running "correctly" and not find out its problems 3 months later when i try to install mafia 2 or starcraft 2?

thanks again guys!

PS..... I was suggested to get the ATI 5870 1GB instead of the Nvidia 470, was that a good choice? i heard the new driver is driving people nuts....

What is this drivesweeper thing? do i NEED to get it to uninstall the most recent driver? confused...

1-

When you take the expanding foam out of the case, yu should look to see if the SATA cables are in correctly, on the motherboard and hard drive or cd/dvd.

2-

I would install it before any applications.

3-

Download "RealTemp" for temperature,

And download CPU-Z from filehippo, just google "cpu z"

4-

You can get a free 1 time benchmark of 3Dmark, you can do the same for FURmark, or anything on futuremark.com

You can also use the Unigine Heaven Benchmark HERE.

5-

You can compare your futuremark scores to systems with similar systems, with same OC, etc.

---------------

The 5870 is WAAAAY better then the 470, and the 10.6 drivers show a very good performance in games. If there was any trouble with the drivers, DSO would pick it up and see whats wrong and fix it

i can understand why you may feel this way, but like it or not, ordering prebuilt systems through the mail means things get jumbled, it will be in your best interests to do this before you even turn on your computer

as far as testing, there are plenty of free programs to test with,
prime95, pcmark, 3dmark, linx
are the main ones
pick up real temps and core temps, also free to monitor system temperatures while testing

you dont need to install an antivirus right away, i would test the system before you start putting a bunch of stuff on it. this will help you troubleshoot if you run into problems

i edited that post.... are the forums still messed up? =/
