Need some help on a decision.

I ordered the config below, but the i5-8400 is out of stock and would delay delivery a few weeks. DS offered to change out the 8400 for the i5-8600k 3.6 which can overclock for an extra $80 or so and a few weeks faster delivery.

I'm not very computer literate and want the computer to last as long as possible so I'm leaning away from the overclocking. I also don't want to spend more unless it's obviously worth it.

Should I pay more for the 8600 and not overclock it or wait longer for the 8400? Also interested in any advice about the build. I may have extra time to make some changes :).

Use for the computer is gaming, usually a few times a week. I enjoy games like Sid Meyers civ, Rust, strategy, MMO. Not into super fast FPS. Not into computer DIY, just want to game without problems.

I would definitely get the i5-8600k if you can. I've seen articles bragging on this proc that compare it to the i7-7700k, that was the preferred gaming proc just a few weeks ago. Reviewers love it. You don't need to overclock it to have great results. I'd also get the high performance fan to go with it though. Rest of the build is nice.

What Cretae is trying to say is that 8600k is more powerful then the 8400k, but in order to avoid bottleneck you want the cpu OCed to 4.2ghz which we can show you to do very easy.

But you need a better cpu cooler, or turbo boost might work.

Thank you for the quick help! What cpu cooler would you recommend? I see a copper option and liquid cooled. I could afford either. If I'm going to get the better processor, it's worth investing in the cooling system.

How would turbo boost replace the need for the better cooling system? Longevity is important for me.

Turbo boost on the 8600k is 4.3 on a single core.   The other cores are somewhat less.   Not a bad clock speed for a gaming rig.    Turbo automatically boosts the cpu speed when needed. Games use mainly single core but that is changing.

If you just keep it at factory, no additional overclock, which isn’t bad, the air cooler is just fine.    The all in one liquid coolers like h115i, would be best bet if you clock it higher.

Turbo works good, overclocking it higher across all cores is better but up to you.

I would recommend h115i with the idea that you will be changing it out ad most will have a leak or pump failure some point, it does have a 5 year warranty if im not mistaken.

The 8700k turbo is 6/7/7/8/9/10, that means your cores on turbo will max out at per core (6 cores) 4.3/4.4/4.4/4.5/4.6/4.7ghz. Those i think should do, problem is we don't have a proper test to see.
