We all just bought the "old" i7's, 2 months ago, so talk of the new i7's is a bit depressing.Smile

the new i7 are ok but they are on a dying platform (p55 socket 1156). the x58 socket 1136 can be upgraded to the next round of cpus at least.

the new CPUs are more budget oriented to compete with AMD
you wont get any big news from them because theyre just slower i7's put on a different socket board, they're still good chips though.

the Core i7 860 performs exactly where you'd expect it to. It's faster than a Core i5 750, faster than a Core i7 920 and slower than a Core i7 870. As I noted in The Lynnfield Follow Up, overclocking is much easier on Bloomfield (LGA-1366) thanks to the absence of an on-die PCIe controller.

In terms of cost effectiveness however - the Core i7 860 is the way to go. With cheaper motherboards and higher operating frequencies than a Core i7 920, for the majority of users the 860 will be the better pick.

I only asked becuase it 860/870 has a lower power-draw of the Lynnfield chips from 130W to 95W.  It is also a mash up of both chips.  Is it better to just give in and get the 920?   I dont plan on upgrading the cpu in the future.  They alway have to complicate things.

i7 920 is the best option out right now IMO, specially since you can upgrade to a 6 core down the road.
