Topic: i7 920 and 940 OC Posted: 22 Feb 2009 at 5:55pm |
Hey just curious because I know that the i7 965 has an unlocked multiplier which makes it easier to OC. How does DS OC the 920 and 940 then and how do they get them so far overstock? Just something that I have been thinking about. Thanks.

we have seen 920 from 3.2 to 3.8
we have seen 940 from 3.5 to 3.8 the i7 just oces very well specially the 920. liquid cooling gives you the best chance at the highest number but the cpu itself has alot to do with it also, some just don't oc well. keep in mind the 920 and 940 are stuck with 1333MHz ram while the 965 can use 1800+ Edited by DST4ME - 22 Feb 2009 at 6:11pm |

From what ive read its not just an unlocked multiplier, its also a memory divider that dictates the speed of ram you are able to utilize.. For a 920/940 you would use 1333mhz and a 965 would handle 1600+.

both 920 and 640 have the same memory controller, only 965 can bypass it.

I know where you are coming from, but with a 940 you are almost guarantee that no matter what you will get an OC of 3.5 or 3.6 or higher, cause the 940 is starting at 3.0.
but the 920 you could end up with 3.20GHz. not sure if that is worth the price or not. |

How is the 920 or 940 stuck with 1333Mhz ram? My 920 has the ram running @ 1672Mhz with 7,7,7 timings ..?

I see, I have seen others with a lot higher than mine, but maybe its a crap shoot when you get that high?

What the motherboard can run is different then what the CPU can do. your motherboard can probably run 2000MHz ram but your CPU will not be communicating with it that fast.

with Everest ulitimate my memory read & write bandwidth are both over 20,000Mb/s read nearly 21,000mb/s, lol. I have not seen any 965's with 1600 mhz ram, overlocked to similar speeds doing any better? So I can't see how the CPU is not communicating fast enough?

As I said, when you oc the chip you can go to 1600MHz but pass that its gonna be tough. you see your fsb has been raised to 208.3 vs the default which is 133, at 133 fsb you would be comunicatig with the ram at 1600MHz.
try running a 2000MHz ram with your 920 and tell me what happens |

I really don't see why I need to go out and but 2000mhz ram, when lots of other people have done it on there 920's? 1600 works fine for me because I used an 8 multi on the ram, if the B-clock was pushed much more, my ram would not be able to OC any more, and I would have to revert to a 6 multi, which would bring the ram down bellow 1300mhz.
Also the I7 does not have a FSB. lol

Justin, if you search my posts in this forum from before the i7 even came out, you will see me telling people that the main reason I love the i7 is because it longer suffers from fsb, its not qpi, when I said fsb I was refering you to look at your pic, which does list it as fsb.

I know, just busting your chops. lol
I don't know what the current record is, but a while back, 2530mhz ram speed was the record for a 920

a 965 will always run faster with the same speed ram at and above 1600

When you say run faster, what part do you mean? Core clock? or ?

Ok, I see what you mean. What ram speed are you going to put into your new build?

I'm going with 965 so either 1866 or 2000 I guess.

hmm, well I was hoping to compare Everest, but with that much higher ram speed, it woild not be comparable. lol
It would be interesting to see the differences @ the same ram speed.

FYI, my 940 was DS overclocked to 4.025. Works great, liquid cooled of course, temps are a non-issue.

My 920 was DS overclocked to 3.591 on the V8 "air" and I just love how it performs. With the HAF 932 case DST4ME recommended it stays nice and cool also at that overclock.
Every chip overclocks differently and it is like winning the lottery when you get one that overclocks well.

Yep, that HAF 932 case is amazing. Love it. And I still can't get over that it's exhausting cool air, I'm so used to PCs blowing warm air into the room. Couldn't be happier with the whole package.
Frankly, I'll never buy from other than DS and I'll heartily recommend DS to anyone who asks.

Don't get me wrong, I know everyone is tooting how wonderful the i7 920 at OC is, but it's also been proven that X4 940 will OC up too 4.2 with stability on air cooled! Correct me if I am wrong, but the just set the OC record with the x4 of 6.5 ghz! D***! But the build a system with both chips with the same parts, and you come up with a savings of $208 going with X4...IDK about everyone else...but savings is savings!
Plus when it comes to the ram speed...I have heard from numerous people on here, and DST4me is one of them that you will not notice the difference in ram speed |

you will not notice a difference between 1333 and 1600 but you should see the difference between say 1333 and 2000MHz.
