Hey guys.  Any good benchmarks for the i7 920 and how much of a fps increase you'll get with overclocking?  All I could find was this one...http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclock-core-i7,2268.html

when you get to 1600 x 1200 and higher the cpu speed will make less of a difference in most games. once you are at around 3.8GHz you are good to go as far as gaming is concerned.

don't pay too much attention to tom'shardware they are full of bs.

for example notice how 2 out of 3 games benchmark they show is at 1200 x 1000, that is because if they were to do the test in 1900 x 1200 there would not have been much of a difference unless you were under 3.3GHz.

I don't know if I can find it again, but at 1920x1200 resolution, with about ten top games, eye candy maxed with a 5870 GPU, using an i7, most games needed only 2.1-2.8Ghz to max out the GPU. Granted these games all took advantage of multiple threads, but it was pretty good read.
Some games seem to add FPS as you overclock way up, others don't. Fallout 3 is a good example of a CPU limiting game.
So bottom line, it depends on the GPU(s) used, the resolution, the graphics settings, and mostly the game itself.
So there is no answer, except you can't have too much power, only too little. Ouch

Thanks guys.  Just trying to see if I should overclock my one rig and if so how far I should try and go.  It would have to make a major difference at 1920x1080 res for me to do so.
@DST4ME...yes I did notice the lack of a consistant res that Tom's tested at.  Thanks for bringing that to my attention.  I guess you have to take these benchs with a grain of salt.
