This forum is really helpful.

If I order a build with stage 2 air cooling is the expensive of going with the i7 940 over the i7 920 worth it in terms of overclocking potential?  In other words will I be wasting money on a more expensive chip because I'm afraid of liquid cooling maintenance?

Thanks

No, The 940 at the same speed as the 920 will not run any cooler.

your OC is dependent more on the chip itself then anything else, you can end up with a 920 that OCes better then the 940 or vise versa.

Yeah, what DST is saying is its kinda the luck of the draw, some i7920s OC better then other i7920s.

But regarding heat the 920 and 940 are the same chip, just factory clocked at 2.66 and 2.93 respectively. so if you force a i7920 to run at 2.93 it will run as hot as the 940, no hoter.

However, reagerding Liquid cooling(LC) maintenance there really is not any. LC is a great option for cooling, and all it takes is for you to check the liquid every so often and top it off when needed. (Like coolent in a car)

However LC is more expensive, and if you dont have the budget to include LC OR if that money could be used to get a better video card or RAM then go with Air cooling.
I suggest the "Noctua nh-u12p"  It is a great air cooler!
