    Posted: 25 Jun 2009 at 5:35pm
Hey guys.

I recently got a new computer and i wanted to overclock it to somewhere around 4.4 to 4.8

Specs

Core i7 975 Extreme Edition @ 3.33ghz (water cooled)
12gigs Corsair Dominator 1600mhz (running at 1333 for some reason)
2x EVGA GTX 295s (Quad SLI)
Running on a MSI Eclipse Motherboard.

I currently have been able to overclock it to 3750mhz by increasing the bus frequency to 150 with the multiplier set to 25 and its running at 1.32v.

I can go as high as 160mhz on the bus speed which makes it run at 4.1ish but the stability goes down.

Ive looked on the internet and apparently with my exact setup people have been able to get the processor to sing as high as 5.7ghz with stability. I am looking to get it to 4.8ish preferably. Any advice you guys can give would be much apprechiated i know the digital storm guys are genius's I should have just paid them to overclock it.

No one has an i7 @ 5.7Ghz "stable" as in 24/7 stable. They may have one that is 1m pi stable. lol

What do you have for water cooling? what are your load temps? What about the other voltages? uncore multi? ram multi and timings?
4.6Ghz is possible with a good CPU and good cooling..

I have proof. lol But I doubt it will be possible with all the ram slots filled.

Still have yet to see any i7 with HT on 24/7 prime95 stable over 4.7Ghz a 975 or not. I can run 3d mark or pi at 4.9Ghz http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=583098   But no way prime95 24 hour stable. I have seen 975's run well into the 5ghz range for benching, but not stable OC.

If you are running unstable then you will eventually corrupt your drive.

download Linx here, and tell me what your highest temp is.

HT off helps stable an overclock. HT is great, but, honestly, it's an extra four virtual cores, not an additional 4 physical cores.

If you out weigh the benefits of turning HT off to get a higher/stable overclock it's definitely worth turning it off.

It just matters, if you can utilize all 8 threads, then I don't see why anyone would turn it off. If you can't utilize them then I guess. lol But like I said, I still don't see anything higher than 4.7 with HT off, unless someone wants to disable 3 cores also, then maybe. lol

usually it is only 100-200 Mhz difference in an OC by turning HT off.

Do you guys think its reasonable that i could run my i7 975 at 4.4 to 4.8ghz 24/7? Or should i be happy with a stable 3.8? I really want to get the most out of my computer, lord knows it cost me a pretty penny.

Thanks again

the nzxt does not show cpu temp, it matters who installed it, but it is impossible to put the probe on the IHS.

Can you post a screen shot of it? Please post Cpuz also.
http://cpuid.com/ download the 1.51 cpuz setup version.

60C is still very good temps.
