So basically, should I drop $600 on an i7 now, or wait till Q2 next year for the 6 core to drop prices?

If you really need to upgrade then you should, but if it isn't that important than I would wait.

Wait till next year, unless you got money to waste on an i7 now and then more money for the 6 core later

well with the speculation of the 920 going away after a while it just may be more worth it 2 do so now. i estimate that theyll get rid of it once the gulftown gets ready 2 come out so i'd say now just in case or you gonna pay more for the 960 or 940 (more likely the 960) anyways

Q4 is rumored that the 920 and 950 will be discontinued, so if ya want a cheapo chip, id say get a 920 now.

"Cheapo" chip...maybe... but all the parts; case, SLI, LC, PSU, etc...surrounding it sure add up to something Edited by Zardoz8719 - 20 Jun 2009 at 3:52pm |

If the 920 does go away, then its because there is a chip that can do what it does but for less.
also it is a rumor one that Intel has denied, but we have to wait and see, you never know with these things. |

Be sure to let me know when/if it happens, so I can pick up one of the remaining ones or see if something replaces them.

S---
I've been reading up on it, and Intel more or less stated that the 920 and 940 will be dropped, and the 'i5' equivalents will take their place. Problems: i5 doesn't look like it's going to OC well (due to it being a 'budget' chip) i5 has an integrated PCIe system (limited to 16 lanes) i5 uses dual-channel DDR3 (Phenom II much?) And the big one: Intel had to stick the i5 on a freaking new socket! I might have to drop some on a 920. :/ Edited by Zurginator - 25 Jun 2009 at 11:19am |

940 has gone away cause of 950, by the time 920 goes away, if/when it goes away 5 month later Gulftown will come out, its not worth it.

Nothing wrong with a 920. Even it is overkill in most games. If you try to keep up with technology you will never buy anything. There is always something better/faster over the horizon. Just my opinion though.

In about 5 years, you should see quantum computing hitting commercial use along with advances in data relay and furtherance of cloud computing and non-keyboard user interfaces. Ya could wait for that? Then again, that's like 5 yrs. from now.

are there any new articles that say the 920 is going to go away? I have not seen any.
to me spending money on a CPU when you know 5 month later you gonna upgrade it, is kinda pointless. but thats just me, if it was a year or more I can understand but 5 month or even less, makes no sense to me. |

Ah the eternal struggle; buy now or buy later? GeneralShrooms already summed it up; if you 'need' and upgrade now...do it, buy it, OC it and be happy with it. If your current computer still has some legs and you think it can hold you over until the next chip comes out, then you don't really 'need' an upgrade...save your money, buy the next chip, OC it and be happy with it. Ultimately EVERYONE has varying opinions on the word "need". All we can do is help you figure out how you feel about it. Maybe if we knew what you have right now we could offer a more educated answer based on our opinions, but right now it's kinda speculative. |

The thing is I'm NOT going to upgrade. I want a 920. I was asking about waiting because the 6-core would drop the prices on the 920. Does this mean I should go ahead and buy now?

I agree, buy it now. And yes, from personal experience it is well worth it's price...especially if you OC.

I don't see how 5 month is a life time ordeal, specially if its gonna save you money. (assuming he was gonna upgrade to gulftown) or how that pertains to me

Can anybody link me to a trustworthy site that will give me a guaranteed D0 stepping 920? Because from what I've heard, both Newegg and Tiger still have some C0s.

either here https://www.antaresdigital.com/customer/product.php?productid=16135&cat=0&page=1 make sure you select D0 stepping in the drop down box.
Pretty good odds of getting a D0 now anyways.

So I was just thinking, would it be possible for me to just buy the CPU itself from DS, have them OC it (to make sure it will be within my standards, I'm getting a quad rad), then ship it to me with what settings they used to get it to that point?

are you saying you want DS to send you the cpu itself only and then tell you what its oc specs were?

Like I want them to test it to be sure it will stay between say 4-4.5 Ghz stable, and then send it to me, with what multiplier, fsb, etc they used to get to that so I can replicate it within my computer.

Most 920's won't even overclock to 4.5Ghz 24/7 stable with ht on, and most people do not have the cooling needed for that kind of overclock. Plus there are too many variables with ram, motherboard, GPU's, PSU's ect involved to make something like that work. On a small overclock maybe, but not one that high.

If it is a good chip, and they use the same MB as you, same Ram, I would say it is possible.

Idk... I *think* it could get to 4.5 on a Classified, but I'm not sure I want to spend that kind of extra money for a .5 Ghz OC.....
