I was looking at buying me an i7, but I have 2 questions:
1- What is the i7 with the best price/performance/OC balance? (remember, tight budget, 965 is out of the question) 2- Anything coming up within the next 2-3 months that would drastically drop the prices of the i7 and/or i7 motherboards? |

when the gulftown comes out in 2011 yeah but not till then! and id say 2,200 with LC ,1 graphics card, withan OC at bout 3.4 would get what u want. at least that be perfect 4 me, but its just me ud get about 95% of the 920 perforamnce with the Phenom 2 black 955. and maybe 86% - 89% of the 965 wit it and it save u bout 200-300 or leave u with the option of getting a much more needed 2nd graphics card. the closest theing 2 a DRASTIC drop if ure lucky will be in Q4 2009 if something happens and a new breakthrough tech comes through which i seriously doubt.
but back to 1) if we knew like what games u play, how often, and what type of monitor ud use some1 may be more able to help you but id still say 920 -6GB 1333mhz with LC and 1 GTX 875 or better yet a RADEON 4890(remeber there no game out there that can properly use phys X) and 2 HD with 1x 500GB at 7200 RPM would do you. im mean u can always OC at 920 way higher than a stock 965 and get a 2 GPU in CF or SLI , and a Veloci or SSD later when u get the dough. DS will walk you through the instilations i believe, but regardless is supereasy with the HAF. ALso id go with the 750 or 910 powers supply.

go with the i7-920 in the HAF, get liquid cooling so you can get the higher OC,
with a 910 WAtt powersupply , HD1 1x500GB western D and HD2 1x500 GB Western D, with eitther 1 Geforce 275 or a Radeon 4890. Not the most TOp of the line rig but its extremely upgradeable so when you get the cash at your leisure you can get the performance 2

No, what I'm saying is I'm upgrading my current rig myself (I've got everything I need, I'm just looking at the CPU/mobo)

my bad cuz get the 920 u can always OC higher than the 965 you just won get the higher bandwith memory. 940 is OK and so is the 965, but like i said if its 2 much just get the Phenom 2 black yeah its not as great as the 965,but it does besat the i7's in a few areas given certain configs. but if you got the cash go with the i7 Note: im only saying Phenom 2 black cuz u looking for the i7 price drop which wont happen anytime soon - a mircle happens

No question about it, get a 920, D0 stepping and you are good for 4.4-4.5 Ghz with decent cooling. Don't believe that BS about not being able to run 2000 mhz ram either. lol One of my 920's is running its ram at 2100Mhz just fine.
Do not get a c0/c1 stepping so that rules out a 940 and a 965.

There is a huge boost. 13 Gigs a second compared to 23 gigs a second.. Run wprime, or any other bandwidth intensive program. there is no comparision

So I should really go with the 920? That's good, b/c it's the only one I think is even somewhat decently priced.

I have 3 systems currently running 920's. here is one.
My wifes is just as good or better, but her ram is only 1600 Mhz and it won't OC for crap, so until I get her better ram she is stuck a @ 4.22Ghz but with a 1.26 v core. lol a lot left in it!
Just make sure you get a D0 stepping chip.

lol, when you purchase a chip look on the box, S-spec SLBEJ. it is the new stepping of the 920. and it is a decent improvement of the C0/C1 stepping

Well I'm buying from NewEgg, so is there a way to tell before hand? If not can you recommend a dealer near Atlanta GA that sells them? (Preferably near Kennesaw GA)

you need to go to a local dealer and ask them for do stepping, the only way to distinguish them is by the spec code "SLBEJ" for D0 and "SLBCH" for C0.

.... Is there any way I could buy an i7 from DS?
Hell, I'd pay a little extra for DS to get me D0 stepping, b/c there are no local dealers really..... |

the D0 stepping makes a huge difference, that chip will OC much better and easier.
if you are plaining on going Tri sli or things like that Gigabyte can't do that, FYI. |

HM do you know what the D0 stepping is and how it makes a difference? cause knowing how to OC got nothing to do with it, otherwise we would not have mentioned it.
also I don't know who needs 3 GPUs some do, what me and you do has nothing to do with with others do, maybe he wants a 30" monitor, he will need 3 GPUs to get to 60fps in that resolution. anyways why pay for C0 when D0 is better and same price, why pay for a 2 gpu slot mobo when you can pay the same and get a 3 slot mobo. |

you can know how to OC all you want you can't change the limits of what the chip will let you do
its is for OCing but that does not mean that you can do the same thing with a C0 that you can do with the D0, thats the whole point. tigredirect is no different then newegg, odds are more that you get a C0 from them then a D0 |

I bought a 920 from Newegg last week, and recieved a D0. "A" batch, great chip. Seems it is a 60/40 chance now at the Egg. There is another place selling them for $6.00 more than the egg, but for sure a D0. C0/C1 stepping is fine, most OC 4.0-4.2 Ghz some poor batches only 3.8-3.9. I have only played with a few D0's but they all will do 4.6 Ghz on a poor board, a better board, that will break the 222 B-clock wall, will take them into the low 5Ghz, on Ln2 5.5-6.0 Ghz.
It depends on the original posters goals, cooling, ram, budget. lol
