First off, it's the Phenom II, not AMD II

2ndly, the i7 and PII are not even meant to be compared. Look at the prices.

So obviously the i7 performs better, but it costs more as well.

go with a 920 i7, or even if you are gonna get it in a couple of month the i5 will be out and its prices are like amd and it kills amd too.

what is your budget and what resolution will be gaming at?

Actually, the amd phII 955x4 is proving to be very close to the 920i7 for gaming, but at a lower cost. Bang for buck, the phenom2 is the choice to go with. If you need the absolute edge, i7 wins, at a cost.

As for the i5, it appears that the new Athlon II chips will be very competitive. AMD is always competing at the entry level, but they are keeping busy. Intel's focus always has been the high end enthusiast chips.

I'm a bit confused here, isn't athlon slower then ph II 955x4? cause the i5 beats the ph II 955x4 so I don't see how athlon is competing with it .

athlon is slower and of course it cost less but its not beating the ph II 955 x4 which gets beat by i5, how that works out to athlon is competing with i5 is pure mystery to me.

Hmmm, in that case, my bad. I'm confusing the intel nomenclature then. I've only heard rumors about athlon II clock speeds, but they should be pretty good for their price. Major difference between ph II and athlon II is that athlons are running sans lvl 3 cache memory. It should mean that running it with ddr3 mem will be a significant improvement over ddr2.

For budget gaming, I'm looking at p II x 3 atm. In nearly all games, the fourth core doesn't make a significant difference, however, the ph II 955x4 is looking very strong for its price range. At the rate the economy is going, I'm even staring at an athlon II x3 or 4...
