Budget:
2700 (3k-300) Expectations: 8+ years of useful computer life without needing new CPU/Motherboard Usage: Primary Usage: * Gaming (all kinds, more simulation and strategy than FPS though) - e.g. City Skylines, Poly Bridge, Civilization, Tabletop Simulator, Roblox with my godson * VR use (Unit not yet purchased) - Mostly to get away during quarantine * Design and large image manipulation (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator) - RAW, large scans, batch manipulation as well Secondary Usage: * Coding (Compiling) and large dataset manipulation, maybe some dabbling in ML Special Needs: * Currently have a Dell U2415 monitor for general use, but may invest in a 4k TV/Monitor as well. * Would like a quiet PC as much as possible. DS staff recommended Slade or Antec for sound dampening * Don't care about looks. Old school. No bling necessary. Just reliability, quiet, and speed. My office can get up to 77F/25C - if that factors in to reliability/temps. Saved Ticket #: None Specifications: Digital Storm Desktop - Config ID 3343040 - SKU 2825799 $3,022.00 System Configuration: Chassis Model: Digital Storm Slade X Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i9-10900K (5.3 GHz Turbo) (20-Thread) (10-Core) 3.7 Ghz Motherboard: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XII HERO (Wi-Fi) (Intel Z490 Chipset) (Up to 3x PCI-E Devices) System Memory: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz Digital Storm Performance Series Power Supply: 850W Corsair / EVGA / Thermaltake (Modular) (80 Plus Gold) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Optical Drive: - No Thanks Storage Set 1: 1x SSD M.2 (1TB Samsung 970 EVO PLUS) (NVM Express) Storage Set 2: - No Thanks Storage Set 3: - No Thanks RAID Config: - No Thanks RAID Card: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB (VR Ready) Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Add On Card: - No Thanks Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Digital Storm Vortex Liquid CPU Cooler (Dual Fan) (Fully Sealed + No Maintenance) HydroLux Tubing Style: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected HydroLux Fluid Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a custom HydroLux liquid cooling system selected Cable Management: Premium Cable Management (Strategically Routed & Organized for Airflow) Chassis Fans: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Airflow Control: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: Option Not Available CPU Boost: Stock Factory Turbo Boost Advanced Automatic Overclocking Graphics: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) OS Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: USB Drive - Windows 10 Installation (Format and Clean Install) Virus Protection: Windows Defender Antivirus (Built-in to Windows 10) Office: - No Thanks Mouse Pad: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks Branded Gear: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 15-20 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty (3 Year Labor & 1 Year Part Replacement) I chose Intel after reading and reading and reading some more about performance of "regular" applications like photoshop - as well as gaming. I chose the HERO motherboard for the 5G lan and the ability to go to 128GB someday. (The 5G was appealing because I have a 2G NAS to deal with.) I chose the Samsung Evo Plus because it seems to be the best PCIe Gen3 in terms of average write speed. (I was tempted by the Gen4 MSI motherboard and Seagate, but it seemed unnecessary and started to push the price up.) I have a Win 10 Pro license I can repurpose, but I wanted DS to install home just to have something for them to stress test. I plan on adding my own additional storage because the prices for regular SSDs have come down more than DS reflects currently. The 2070S seemed like the right price point for something I may or may not upgrade later. (The 2808S didn't seem to have the value proposition for something who doesn't play a lot of first person shooters.) But I welcome feedback here. Aiming to hit the magical 3k mark for the 300 dollar discount. Thanks!! |

* Double checking : The System Memory: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz Digital Storm Performance Series is one stick, correct?
* In case anyone is curious, I was severely tempted by the Creator motherboard for the Thunderbolt 3, but the lack of SLI support seemed sorta heartbreaking. Edited by couch_shocking_goose - 25 Aug 2020 at 4:16pm |

If you are putting a high priority on sound suppression, I would suggest the Corsair ML (magnetic lev) chassis fans. I have 6 of those on my Lumos and they are virtually silent.

I should look into those for my 8 year old Digital Storm system, because I still don’t have to upgrade it, but some of the fans are getting louder.

No problems. You seem to know what you need and what you want. Ram is dual channel, so, at least 2 sticks are required. You can specify 2x 16GB in remarks.

Ah. I found the memory pairings in the pop-up and upgraded accordingly. (Looks like you have to go with the cosair to get 2x16)
Also - given that it is impossible to get a Thunderbolt expasion card these days, I have decided to swap in the ProArt. It looks like the fan upgrade options are limited on DS - so I'll have to look for the ML fans elsewhere.

Those fans are available for the other cases. There must be some reason they don't sell them for the Slade. No idea why, but you should ask before you order fans that won't fit.

Hrm. I tried swapping out the Slade for the Velox and still the same two fans show up.
Corsair LL Series (RGB Fans) (Software Controlled Effects) [+$279] Special Offer Thermaltake Riing Plus (RGB Fans) (Software Controlled Effects) [+$289] My guess is that DS is just having trouble keeping the ML fans in stock. (I asked about the ASUS ThunderboltEX 3-TR yesterday, and that was the answer for that particular part. I'm extrapolating from that and other online sites.) It looks like another internet retailer might have a twin pack of the ML fans coming in mid-September. I'll ping the DS folks to make sure, but it looks like the Slade can fit two 140s in the front according to the spec popup. As long as they do indeed fit, sounds like they're what I'm looking for. Thank again! |

Ahhh, you would be right about availability. I didn't even consider that.
