Skulltrail is Intel's enthusiast platform. It's a motherboard that has two LGA771 sockets and able to do Crossfire or SLI. You can put two QX9775 processors in it =)
The processors and board alone is around $4000. |

I'm sure a single top-end CPU would be enough for his flying needs. Besides, skulltrail is sorta weird. I mean, what's up with not supporting DDR3 on a top-end mobo?
So yah Harely. Just get a better CPU and overclock it. I'm sure you have an extra kidney you could sell. Or testicle. Or your soul. |

Oh no. I thought they got your clocks back up Harleyman. Are you still at 3.15? I'm with SkyR for at least the first part of his post. Drop in a Q9550, and see how that does for you. Skulltrail indeed...

If your a dedicated FSX 'er like me and don't care about other software titles (as in non-flight sim) the real question is what kind of upgrades will FSX benefit from, period. If a hardware upgrade does something to give a few more FPS in Crysis is that important to you? Flight sims seem to have slightly different feeding requirements and it appears that none of the hardware manufacturers are interested in developing architectures or drivers to cater to such a small segment of the "gaming" community. Just a reality of the business world.
Personally, I could give a rats petudy about benchmarks and test scores. They are like a boat anchor without a boat, so what. Virtually nobody uses FSX to test new equipment with because of the unique demands it puts on a system which don't apply equally to the majority of software titles out there and so would not be very meaningful to the vast majority of their readership.
I've been using Raid 0 and SLI for over 2 years to no significant benefit that I can discern in FSX. My new build (should ship to me next week and arrive just before I head to the airport for a 10 day fishing trip, arrgghh!!!) is built for speed, a fast CPU liquid cooled to allow the best OC'ing, the fastest 4 GB's of RAM I could put in, Vista 64 to make use of all the RAM without tweaking, and a single fast GPU with with a substantial memory bus and memory bandwidth. And this time I'll try 2 independent drives to keep the OS and FSX separated. Turn off all the fancy graphics and bells and whistles (Yea, I like Windows Classic look), no wallpapers, no screen savers, no power modes, etc. It's crazy, thousands of dollars in hardware to run a $50.00 software tltle. LOL
And just because Skulltrail is the most expensive MOBO doesn't translate to best performance in FSX. Got to rely on the DS folks that play at FSX to get some direction. I'll let you know how mine works out.

I went with the 9650 Extreme 3.0 (with 4 GB 1800 Mhz DHX) as suggested by DS for better OC'ing results than the 9770 and put the money saved into liquid cooling, again to allow (in theory) a better OC. We shall see.
