Ok I am at a loss because I normaly have used ATI for my graphics but I dont want to spend alot of money this time I feel NVIDIA will be better this next round so My list is as follows.

Wait for the 9800GTX/OC/ULTRA
Get a 8800GTX Ultra now before the launch
get a second later after price drops
Or SLI
8800GTS 6400 OC
8800GTS 512

I play at NATIVE 1400/1050  ASUS LS201 20"
So thats my question what would be best for now and next 2-3years before getting new cards to replace them?

Me personally id wait, since the new cards are a little under a month away.

That way, if they suck, youll know about it, if they rock then youll know about it.

Either way the price of the old stuff will probably go down too....

Plus id buy one card and get a second one later if i want it. Doing SLI isnt hard at all by yourself. Its probably harder fiddling with the software then actually installing it.

I would just pick up a single 8800GTS 512 for your resolution...

***expected dates***
The 9800GX2 releases on March 18th.
The 9800GTX releases on March 25th.
The 9800GT releases on April 3rd.
The only thing that keeps me wishing on a wishing star.

The problem with buying the top of the line graphics card is you pay top dollar for it. At those resolutions you can go with the 8800gt 512 or the 8800gts 512 and play just about any game at very high settings. Save your money and buy another mid priced card in a couple of years. You will come out ahead money wise and not notice any lose in game play.

I have a friend that said I should wait to buy my system back in June 07, because DDR3 was coming out.

Then he said I should wait, because the new Intel CPU's were coming out.

I went ahead and bought my system in Oct.

Now that I'm looking to upgrade my GPU, he thinks I should wait for the next card to come out.

I will buy as soon as I am able, and look for the best bang for my $$$.

My point is, if you try and wait for the best time to buy, it will never come. Right now is an awesome time to buy. The Q6600 is one of the most powerful processors for the $$$ I have ever seen given the context of it's competition, and the Wolfdale CPU's aren't bad at all.  The 8800 series of GPU is hands down *the* most powerful GPU for the $$$ I have ever seen, and I've been playing games on the PC for longer than there have been discrete graphics cards, so I've seen my fair share.

IMHO, if you need a PC now, buy the PC now. For the resolutions you're gaming at, the 8800GTS is a phenominal card. Here's a chart to illustrates where SLI comes into it's own (source: 3d Guru):

Note where SLI really seperates from a single card- resolutions above 1600x1200. Your monitor's native resolution is slightly above that 1280x1024 resolution. You are looking at a frame or two per second in most titles. This is why people are advising you to go with the single 8800GTS.
