Ok, not sure if this is the correct forum for this question but here goes. If you could buy just one game from the RPG or FPS category that came out within the last 2 years, what would it be? You see, I currently own a very old dell 4300 and I have not been able to purchase a newer game in quite some time. Yesterday, I finally ordered a new machine from DS so I am already thinking about what game I should buy. My current thoughts are Oblivion, Gothic 3, Neverwinter Nights 2, Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, Fear, Bioshock, or Half life 2. Now, I can only pick one game for the time being so I would like your ideas as to what it should be. I would like any or all input, maybe I didn’t list the one game I should purchase when I get the new DS machine. What do you think? What is the one best game from the last couple of years? |

I'm in the same boat as you, but you can pick up Battlefield 2 at Best Buy for $9.99. (I already did and now I await my new machine to play it on.)

OBLIVIONOBLIVIONOBLIVION. I can't wait to see it on my soon-to-be (I
hope) shipped DS rig. If you do get it - the right mods can really make
the game even better than it already is by far. The right graphics mods
can make you weep in stunned amazement.
Look at these...![]() ![]() Although, while I wait, I have been trying to get the much-older Daggerfall to work on my laptop (XP) to no avail. Used the XP installer patch, but controls are all messed up. DOSBox seems like it will take a lot of work to get right.. Might be for the best - having a playable Daggerfall again might render me useless to the outside world. Chris |

They are all older than two years, but IMHO among the best FPS/RPS games of all time that might still actually work with XP are:
EDIT: But I see I missed the point of your question completely. You will definately get the most bang for the buck from Oblivion. HL2 would be my second choice. I also liked STALKER, but it is a really flawed game.
Make sure you've got enough cash for Crysis next month. Edited by Bill the Cat - 05 Oct 2007 at 3:07pm |

I would say Half Life 2 or something like F.E.A.R.
Also, while not quite as good as the two I mentioned above, but Condemned: Criminal Origins (made by the same guys who did F.E.A.R.) is the only game I actually get scared playing. Edited by nomec - 05 Oct 2007 at 4:03pm |

My old system was 5 years old, and I hadn't played any cutting edge games in awhile. I tend to buy games when they get cheap, so I have things like Driv3r, Chronicles of Riddick Escape From Butcher Bay, GTA San Andreas, Thief 3, and True Crime: Streets of New York that are sitting on my desk, unopened. With my new DS system, I've already started adding things like Call of Duty 4 and Stranglehold to my Amazon wishlist and have notified the proper family members
What I am replaying on my way DS system to see them with all settings maxed out are Call of Duty 2 and Half-Life 2. These games have great replay value, and they look stunning on my new computer.
I'd recommend either of those as great games to act as a warm-up for your Digital Storm system.
Now, if you want to talk favorite game of all time, I have to go with Max Payne 1 and 2. On my old system, until I started cleaning out my hard drive in anticipation of the new DS CPU, I had never uninstalled Max Payne. The replay value, especially with Kennth Yeung's Kung Fu Mod, kept me going for years.
One of my past times was making game play movies set to music. I loved being able to put the "camera" wherever I wanted. I have several videos posted at You Tube under the 67alecto name.
I'm looking forward to seeing how well this DS quad-core system renders video compared to my old P4 2.26 machine.
Check out this one I made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6G_qR5PirQ

I know what you mean - I have the original gold box SSI series - Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, etc - on 3.5" and 5.25" disks. I nearly went with a floppy disk on my DS machine just for those.

I can't make up my mind on a FPS or RP game so I will just say one game.
Chess, enough said. That game never gets old, hahaha.

Oblivion. A fantastic game to begin with, not to mention a huge mod
scene that improves the game tenfold. Installing Oscuro's Oblivion
Overhaul is a must.
FEAR is also great, BF2142 is fun, and the Orange Box is an absolute must-have for any FPS fan. |

I am really a half life 2 fan. Best FPS ever made.
My first on line experience was with Team Fortress. I wish I could play the new TF2 but this computer will not handle it.
You can get extended play for episode 1 with the Minerva-metastasis, which I think was better than episode 1.
Of course my selections have to be limited because my OLD Dell Dimension 8200 with a 128 card will not play any new games.

Exactly what I was thinking. The HL2 multiplayer may not give you the replayability of some of the other titles mentioned but the Orange Box does include Team Fortress 2 so that may satisfy your multiplayer needs.
Besides, HL2 single player is just flat out awesome. |

If you're more of a single-player person, I agree with everyone here that Half-Life 2 would be the best single-player shooter of the past couple of years, and the Orange Box (HL2 + expansions, Team Fortress, Portal) would be the best way to get it since you're getting some other goodies with it. RPG-wise, the best single player game would have to be Oblivion.
Multiplayer, I personally think Joint Ops (and the expansion) was the best multiplayer FPS released in the past few years, but it's hard to find a full server for that game anymore. It's still a great game if you can get a full server with good options, or if you want to play competitively or co-op via LAN (and it should be really cheap). If you don't care about co-op or LAN play and only want to participate in competitive Internet play, either BF2 or BF2142 is a good choice. Just be aware that EA in their questionable wisdom has limited LAN and co-op options and really cracked down on mods that enhance LAN/co-op play, so those games are very one-dimensional (albeit very, very good at that single dimension). Call of Duty 4 (if you're into tactical shooters) and Unreal Tournament 3 (if you're more into run-and-gun almost arcade-y shooters) are both being released next month and should show off your new DS rig nicely, so it might be worth waiting. As for multiplayer RPG, World of Warcraft is sort of a no-brainer. It's a well-designed game, 9 million subscribers, etc. The only thing that might be difficult is finding people to do stuff with when you're just starting out since most active players are at the level cap (currently 70) right now, though they might occasionally create another new character from time to time. |

Check around for what demo's are available and go from there would be the best solution since their's been so many suggestions.

You can use an Emulator Like DosBox. Try searching for on Google. it is really stable and the number of games being supported by it is increasing everyday. Actively developed and maintained. Edited by Rexxaran - 10 Oct 2007 at 2:37am |
