Hello everyone, i am new to the forums!
i'm in need of a new pc FOR school plus my current computer is old and is pentium 2 with dial up lol and i saw an ad for digital storm so i decided to check it out and see what i can work with. i tried to max out the ram and hdd as much as i could with my budget. Suggestions are highly welcome ( i dont know much about computers and i plan on working photoshop, some gaming (wow, starcraft and possibly RA3), watching films, and maybe tweak with some video editing and audio engineering
please tell me if i need to change something.. i want the pc to run flawlessly also, i have a question about overclocking option.. do they overclock for me? and the tweaking of the OS, does this mean they make all those useless services take less cache or something? please explain and THANK YOU HERE ARE THE SPECS.

If you can stretch that budget by ~$100, here's a configuration that should cover all of the bases well for you.

heres my Ticket Number: 182569 does chassis really make a large difference? and the power supply, more watt is better right? |

chassis does make a difference, in both cooling and working in the box.
power supply you only want what you need, and a bit more if you gonna upgrade. too much power is a waste of money
second dvd drive is pointless unless you have particular use/need for it right now. otherwise its not needed you can always put in your old one as a second

Chasis, like everything else, should be balanced against your budget and the things you want from your system. Storing video eats up drive space quickly. You did mention a desire to do some video editing, so I included a terabyte of drive space in the configuration I suggested. Two hard drives is cheaper than a 1 TB drive and easier to maintenance.
If you can afford to drop in a 750W power supply into my listed configuration, you would be able to run an SLI 9800GTX+ configuration at a future date. This is a very powerful setup, but a single 9800GTX+ will be quite able as well. It comes down to budget and what you want from your system.
In answer to your original question, yes, if you select the overclocking option, your CPU comes to you overclocked and stability tested.

thank you both for helping me..
i can always buy a new power supply in the future for upgrades, i totally forgot that i need to buy a monitor, i'll look on newegg like you suggested DST4ME in terms of the chassis, the Antec 900 only has 2 usb ports... i could get one of those multi usb things, but i never bought one before... do you know if they work well? haha o yeah, since i'm going to end up paying lil more than planned, whats the deal with the internal lights? will i have to replace them often?... i mean its only 10 more "chucks" and i heard t theres also no tax? yes? THANKS AGAIN... i'm almost ready to click buy |

There will be tax if you're in CA. Not sure if any other state has a goofy law adding tax. I thought NY was looking to tax from anywhere .
![]() Regarding your monitor, if you can get a widescreen, it is so much nicer with movies that are widescreen. You get more of the movie that way. Choices are hard to make in the budget category. If you can see them in person, that would help in deciding. Considering your use, I would stick with a sound card like the razer baraccuda. Plug in some nice Grados or Sennheisers and you'll be set for good tunes and flicks. ![]() |

You will still have the rear USB ports to use. If you wanted on additional front port, get the media reader, it has a USB port in addition to ports for media cards. The internal lights are not LED's but rather cold cathode tubes. They are rated for something insane like 30,000 hours.

Here is my setup and I work part time as an entertainment photographer so I will use photoshop quite a bit. I dont need the fancy lights, SLI or overclocking, just a basic system that will do the job and has some flexibility down the road. With this I have two USBs in front and six in back, including the card reader for my CF and SD cards. If you have a FRY's near you, you can pick up a good monitor for about $200.

heres the one i might go with
http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=183229
now i reconfig that.. because my mom called my uncle (who is paying for some of it for a grad gift) and he suggested not to overclock the processor because it has more chances for crashing and to overclock the videocard, so i did that i also got rid of the the lights EVEN THO they look so badass, they might be overkill
and i change chassis to the airmaster and does anyone else think 1 TB is overkill cuz i sure dont.. i dont like to compress my music to mp3 cuz it hurts my ears.. i need quality music, so i use apple lossless on my itunes which takes quite a bit of memory Edited by tang526 - 15 Sep 2008 at 12:28am |

I'm sorry but your uncle is wrong, and not very informed about over clocking, if you don't know what you are doing then yes your pc will crash but when done right its no different then no OC as far as perfomance, with the exception ofcourse that oc runs faster.
there is no point in ocing the gpu, he told you backwards
second build is better, I wish you would atleast get teh liquid cooling. oh well, its still a good build

we got the price down to $1887 put the extra money into a better and bigger moniter.
quad chip is only necessary of a few games that are currently available hey suggest lower to intel core 2 due E8500 3.16 -$73 get rid of the light-scribe…need to use special disc to burn i…just use marker -$10 system memory drop to 2gb corsair -$82 he’s it should for photoshop no lighting -$10 no overlocking $-45 air cooled stage 1 cooling -$129 don’t need it especially when u don’t overclock he’s says to upgrade to sound card creative sound blaster X-fi FPS + $90 for sound quality and extra RCA plugs for the front of the pc use XP-Pro instead of vista +$11 anyone else agree? I think its a mistake not to go with quad-core, most games coming out in the next year and future will be utilizing quad-cores,
I think its a mistake to go with only 2GB of ram, again most games coming out will need more then that to run well. I think its a mistake to go with stage one, its not for OC its to keep the PC cool. mistake to go with a sound card if you don't really need it. I think its a mistake to go with XP, some games will work with directx10 which XP can't do, vista will see all your ram XP won't. I can't say I agree with any of those changes, with a possible exception of the sound card and dvd drive. you don't need special disk to burn, only if you want to have the label scribed then you would need it, otherwise you can use it as a regular DVD, but if you don't like it, a regular one is fine too Edited by DST4ME - 15 Sep 2008 at 3:07am |

Even the most mild of overclocks will have a Q9300 operating faster than an E8500. The case selected, in combination with the stage 2 cooling will ensure the system operates cool and quiet. I did drop you down to a 160GB HDD for your OS and games, and left a single 500GB for music and data files.

First, I have to step out and say NO to the Creative xfi for audio. The Razer Baraccuda is better audio-wise and will not have the various potential problems that creative has with a combo of nVidia chipset and Vista. As an experienced audio person (designer, builder, consultant, reviewer) I understand the dreaded sound of mp3s, but go further to say that "lossless" sony is still a compression scheme with its own share of digital anomalies. Unless you have literally tens of thousands of songs on your iTunes, I can't imagine you filling a 500GB HDD. TB drives are expensive and two 500GB drives are safer storage. If one goes, you only lose half your music.
Second, your last two configurations looks like solid choices, but then when your uncle and his friend chose to bring the price down, he also gave you a rather slimmed down budget system. Not that that is a bad thing, it's just that everything seems to have changed. If that is so, then let us work with a new budget. Tyler has come up with a good system that would work rather well for your needs and still take advantage of what is available in the price range. |

I think TL has taken it as bare-bone as you can go, you can always drop the second HDD and get one later.

don't want to step on any toes about going around buying outside parts but you can find some good deals look around. I found and ordered this monitor at circuit city.
This is the same 24" offered by DS for $525 I got for $311 (after sales tax and after $70 mail in rebate). I already have the monitor but have not tested it since I am awaiting my PC. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Samsung-245BW-24-Widescreen-Monitor-245BW/sem/rpsm/oid/185618/catOid/-12965/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do |

everything is gonna have cons and pros.
what you need to look at is A: are the cons something that concerns me B: how many of them are there comparing to the positive reviews. |
