http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=207945(Just some notes to kick things off :The budget I'm not so sure maybe around $2000 to $3000 (Its my dad buying it not me). I like to play FPS games, might be open to trying other geners like World of Warcraft. Also currently using a 17 inch Dell monitor, going to later upgrade to a samsung maybe around 22 inches.) OK, well I'm only 14, looking for a gaming PC, I'm better with computers than my dad, and a friend of mine and I came up with this system configuration. I plan to do stuff like gaming of course and some music, listening really I don't make or edit any music. For minimum I want this system to be able to play Combat Arms smooth on highest everything for graphics and such(http://combatarms.nexon.net/Intro.aspx). As for maximum to be able to play Crysis, doesn't have to be Crysis on very high settings since I'm guessing that will cost a ton more money, this comp is more like a starter to replace my current one that sucks. I just want to be able to play Crysis smoothly maybe on avgerage graphics they give,(http://www.ea.com/crysis/index.jsp). Also we are not looking for a costly system just one that can play games, at low enough price, don't want to be so cheap that I end up with something i regret and doesnt last for a long time(I hope my dad understands that and just doesn't look at the price). So like I guess thats it some input would be nice on what I picked, and what i can expect performance wise from this configuration. At the end if you dont mind add some upgrade sugesstions for the future, when I get a job and start using some of the money to upgrade my computer. |

Boss look at the GTO special here ($1999), its a kickarse system and can handle anything you throw at it and has room for improvement down the road
only change you need to ask them over the phone is to either give you that system with a 260 GTX (for slightly better price) or ask them to upgrade your PSU to a 860w. the reason is that if you keep the 750w PSU it can handle two 260 GTX but not 280s, yet the card comes with a 280. so we either ask for a 260 instead and then later down the road we can upgrade and add a second 260. or we keep the 280 on that package and ask for a 860w PSU so that down the road we can add another 280. some people here have pushed the gto model to run at 3.8GHz
what do you think? Edited by DST4ME - 19 Nov 2008 at 7:21pm |

Ah, I'm not great with computer components the person that really did like 90% of the work was my friend since he is better with computers than me. I saw that the system had intel CPU and I tend to not like intel. Also don't really want to overclock , want my system to last longer, but i take these things into consideration, think about it some more and get back to you guys. In the meanwhile keep adding posts to this thread please.

current phenoms aren't great processors. They'll be bottlenecking the 4870x2 you selected. Intel is a much better option right now. Core i7 920 comes at an amazing price.
4870x2 is total overkill for the resolutions of 17" (1280x1024) and 22" monitors (1680x1050). You'll really only see the real benefits of the 4870x2 when you surpass 1920x1200 (24"+). You'll be much better off with a GTX 260+ or 4870. Having a separate HDD for your operating system and software is a good idea if you are going to have 1TB of data. $2517 If you plan on adding another card for SLI or CrossfireX, you can upgrade the PSU to 860W or 1000W. |

750 W can handle 2 gtx280s in the GtO model I asked I think it was Randy when talking to ds he said It would work and that I should avoid adding any other drives and what not if I plan on adding another gtx280 so im not straining the psu to bad.

choose the gto and then pick a 5 year warranty, and you will be at around $2300, that way you can enjoy oc speeds and 5 year warranty if anything happens. if you don't want to oc then skyR's config is a good one |

Asus Rampage II Extreme comes with sound card. All others come with integrated sound which can be disabled through the BIOS if you ever decide to pick up a sound card.

the intergrated sound of the rampage is actually a card so it can be replaced, other boards are not like that, with others you just add a sound card

The Asus Rampage doesn't have integrated sound. There is a sound card that is bundled with the motherboard. If you don't use a sound card, you won't get sound as there are no audio ports without a sound card.

they are basically the samething the two config only differences are, i got a 1TB hard drive, and u got 500GB, and that 64 bit Vista when i got the one without 64 bit, and i'm staying away from 64 bit b/c i heard it be having some problems, and they cost makes the last difference, and the reason i pikced a big hard drive is b/c i plan to keep the comp for liek 3-5 years only upgrading it, so i need a big hard drive to keep all my music and other files
as for the resolution probably that 1280X1024, which my monitor seems to work best in oh i realized the video card was the big difference Edited by adale - 23 Nov 2008 at 1:34pm |

Yes they are pretty much alike, but the changes I made are important.
1. you don't want a huge drive for your OS, it will be very difficult to maintain. Also if your HDD goes bad you lose all your data. the best thing to do is have 2 drives, not one big one. you use one drive for the OS/apps/games and the second drive for your media files. This way if your OS drives gets a virus or goes bad, you don't lose all your files. so if you can choose a Raptor for your HDD1 and a 500GB for your HDD2, if you need more room you can always add more HDDs down the road there is nothing wrong with 64bit vista, you are thinking about 64bit XP which was horrible. if you don't choose the 64bit vista, all of your ram will not be used. Right now you in that config you have a total of 6.896GB of ram, if you don't choose 64bit you can only use total of 4GB of your 6.896GB total ram. Edited by DST4ME - 23 Nov 2008 at 1:39pm |

Id like to throw in my .2 cents for support of windows vista 64 bits as well.
Move on with the times and technology, also theres nothing wrong with 64 bit, unless if you call being able to utilize more than 3gigs of ram a downside.
Everything else you could improve on was already covered by the community here, nothin' else to add! Edited by Nomak - 23 Nov 2008 at 2:13pm |

Just wanted to add, if you have the cash get the Xonar D2X. The Rampage II's Supreme FX is really not that great.

You should think about getting two 260's if you want to game at that resolution. That is, if you want max settings in your games with a smooth framerate.

its not the size of your monitor, its the resolution, if you are planning on gaming on high settings at 1680 x 1050 or higher then DS recommends you go with 2 GPUs. 2 x 260+ GTX is all you need unless you are going to game at 2560 x 1440. |
