Hi DS folks!
I am getting a Velox system with the MSI x299 board and it has 2 m.2 slots. The system is configured to install the OS on one of the m.2 slots (500 GB drive). If this system was going to your most beloved grandmother, would you get a second m.2 drive to install the apps and games on? Or would you install on the same drive as the OS? Thank you for your input! |

I would install it on the second drive. Invariably, I will run into a situation that requires me to reinstall the OS or need to run a Macrium backup. Games and apps could potentially consume terabytes of data, and require hours if not days to restore. A 500 gb OS drive reinstalls in less than an hour.

Congratulations and welcome to DS. ![]() The Velox is a real good line and spacious case. Make sure that the Storage Set 1 is an NVME drive and not SATA. The 500GB comes in both flavors and you definitely want the OS in an NVME which is way faster than the SATA. The m.2 is a form factor designation and denotes the size. They are both very small. They do run hot so if you are going SATA on the second m.2 I' think about it. Don't know if the second m.2 could be NVME but if so why go SATA there?

Agree with GrandesBollas for the most part, and hoserator has made the most important point about the M.2 slots: don't waste them on a SATA drive. You can get NVMe on both M.2 slots.
The only thing to add is you might want to install defense/maintenance software like malware defense and CCleaner, etc along with your OS. Since I've never done it, I'm not entirely sure you can point, say, Malwarebytes to another drive it's not installed on. Programs like that couldn't protect your OS in real time either, it would seem. To reinstall those after a disaster like GB describes would just be a few downloads.
