Searched the forum for this question and couldn't find a discussion of it.
There's quite a bit of discussion of it on the internet. Some say it's a motherboard setting, one guy said the system is allocating extra ram to the GPU, and yet others say it's a problem with trichannel...any thoughts? Just got my DS system today and system info reads... Installed memory (RAM) 6.00 GB (3.99 GB usable) System type: 64 bit Operating System

This guy seems to have found a solution... http://forums.mushkin.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14654
I also read where one guy solved his issue by re-seating his RAM. He said one stick was loose. Edited by EdH63 - 16 Nov 2009 at 11:18pm |

Every time I've seen this, except one, it's been because a stick is loose. There is a video on what you should do when you get your system and it includes unseating and re-seating all the chips and cards. The one exception was a laptop, under Task Manager it had a hard page fault, under Windows ramtest, it was all good but I gave him memtest on a dos CD and he booted ran memtest and one chip on one stick was bad, took it back and everything was sweet. Oh, then he installed Win7 on his parents computer, also got a hard page fault and all the ram was good. After starting with what he did first, he installed 64bit Win7 on a 32bit machine.

Thanks guys,
My system now reads System memory 6.00 GB and all is well. However... Yesterday, the day it arrived, the only problem I had was that it read 6 gb only 3.99 available. This morning when I turned it on the screen was black and the computer was cycling on and off. Randy from Tech Support helped me. Basically, removing and reinserting all three memory sticks solved it. I had done that before calling him, but apparently, being the idiot I am, I STILL didn't get them seated properly. I think that because they seemed to come out so easily, I didn't realize just how firm a push they needed...have to hear a click on both ends of the stick, not just one. So, I don't know how FedEx manages to loosen memory sticks, but they do. I have a friend works for UPS and when I asked him how they handle shipped computers he said "you don't wanna know" heh Again, thanks for the responses. Al |

If you always remember that the two clips on each side of the stick have to be completely pointing up once they lock in, then you will remember to push harder to get them to snap in. I remember the first time I put RAM in my rig years ago. I thought I was going to break something considering how much force I was applying. Kinda scary.
