Intel's upcoming Core i7 975 EE benchmarked

Fugger gets the first honours

It seems like Intel is getting one step closer to unleashing its second Extreme Edition Core i7 processor within the near future, as well known overclocker Fugger has posted some early benchmarks and overcklocking results for the Core i7 Extreme Edition 975 which comes clocked at a default speed of 3.33GHz.

Although this is hardly a huge step up from the current 965XE part which is clocked at 3.2GHz, the new 975XE seems to overclock much better. Using a Gigabyte EX58-Extreme motherboard, Fugger managed to push the 975XE D0 engineering sample at 5259MHz without any problems and with the help of a pair of Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics cards, him and his partner Mikeguava managed to break 47,000 in 3DMark 05 which is a new world record.

It's likely that Fugger will achieve even higher scores with this CPU given time and it looks like all the overclockers out there will have a new toy to play with in due time. As there are other chips in circulation already, we'd expect more benchmark results to pop up over the next few weeks.

The new enthusiast CPU is ready to be launched in Q2, and more specifically is rumored for launch in June. All in all, it looks like these two overclockers can enjoy their world record for a few more months before the free-for-all begins.

You can find the results and more details of the test setup here

I will have one

Oh dear god. Thats just ridiculous as if the 965EE isn't already a monster. Wonder how much this will cost? My guess is going to be ~$1500

nah, doubt that, with the economy and how things are, I say it will cost around the same price as the current 965 and the 965 will be a bit less.

ok that is better they better hold till june. Hell this is how fast the industry runs, you buy the greatest and before it gets to your hands something better pops out. Well one of these days I will be able to afford keeping up with all the new stuff that comes out on a constant basis Ouch

Sounds like the I7 socketed motherboard will have a lot of CPU upgrade potential over the next few years.  At least if we want to upgrade, our motherboard looks like it will support our needs.

well the 45nm chips will fit the socket but if Westmere is gonna be 32nm then it won't fit.

Hi

What about Sandy Bridge next year and then Ivy Bridge after.  All different sockets?  Sounds like Intel may be shooting itself in it's pud, where an upgrade means a new motherboard as well.  Well at least by 2010 games may be using four cores so one can actually see the benefit of their q9550.

new chip line most times comes with a different socket.

Sandy Bridge wont' come out till at least H2 of 2010 if not H1 of 2011. also even if they were the same socket, you wouldn't be able to stick a sandy bridge in nehalem socket cause they are different sizes, nehalem is 45nm, sandy birdge is going to be 32nm

So basically in about 2 years time if I wanted to upgrade my CPU I wont be able to get the new one Winko well that doesn't matter I dont plan on upgrading or touching anything for atleast 4-5years.

people who got a CPU from 2 years ago can't upgrade now, its always been like that. but in 2 years your CPU will be doing just fine and you won't really have a reason to change it.

the die shrink is getting in the way.

The people who got a CPU four months ago (before the i7s) can't upgrade now either.

The Intel Tick Tock is just forced obsolescence.  There is no reason why the tick and tock can't be combined so that a new architecture is released every two years with the ultimate die form.  That things have always been one way does not make them right.

Alan -

Good to you posting...it's liberating to know that the board members here aren't being censored, censured, or harassed.

CP was a CF....

Regarding the I7's, I think that Intel has hit a bit of a wall with die size, but at 45nm they're going to be able to do great things.  They'll probably hold onto this etch diameter for two years or so..with just MHZ increases and price reductions.

I liked the idea of a $280 2.66 socket 1366..and I agree that people with 775's are being left for dead, but since most apps and games only use 1-2 cores at present, it's still worth building a dual or quad core, if one does not wish to invest in the VERY expensive and relatively quirky X58 boards.

I'm all for holding on to good technology. Since, for example, the 9550 socket 775 CPU is slower than the E8600 for the same money (approx $250), and you can pull down a superb Nvidia 780i or 790i with fast DDR3 RAM for 1/2 the price of an X58 board, the only thing you're "missing" is the two extra cores which are standing unused and slower than the dual core speeds.

The socket 775's are still viable, and you can save $750 on a build or spend that on HOT graphics (disclosure: I own Nvidia stock and options) with Nvidia chipsets, that's where my head is at right now.

BTW..have you heard that Nvidia's TEGRA chipset has been licensed by M'soft for use in their version of the I-Phone?  It's going to have a Win CE -based (upgraded) touchscreen and retroactive compatible apps.  Nvidia is the centerpiece, and the stock is CHEAP right now..but the tech is superb.

Wait until 2/10 when the stock will tank a bit...then grab as much as you can, because once the final M'Soft announcement is made (30 cell phone carriers worldwide will be marketing the new phone with Nvidia core), the stock's going to go up big-time over the next 1-2 years.  Just hold on for the ride.

If you remember from CP, I'm into IT and investigation.  I've put my investigative skills to the test and have dedicated a substantial portion of my portfolio toward Nvidia...and I'm up 22% in the past 6 weeks.

Just an FYI...
"Tegra is a tiny, 144 mm² SoC that includes an ARM11 processor core, a GeForce graphics core, and support for high-definition video decoding and encoding. Nvidia plans to release a second-generation Tegra chip this year, followed by a third-gen model in 2010."

you need to remember that game developers take 3 or so years developing games
they cant keep up with the tech updgrades
might as well spend your money right now on a 965 Ex, 2x 285 or 295, some blazing memory and a few Veloci's . Getting the best of the best right now will easily hold you over for 4-5 yrs
