    Posted: 13 May 2011 at 1:49am
Hey guys, finally pulled the trigger on 2 intel 160's and decided to do a raid 0 setup. Only problem is.... I have no clue where to start. Ive only installed traditional hard drives and have never raided them. Anyone know a guide or could possibly walk me through the process? I want to get the best performance out of my drives, I know there are all sorts of striping sizes. My mobo is an asus rampage II extreme, running bios version 1504 if that matters at all. Also whats the best way to wipe a drive? I plan on using my 300gig velociraptor for music/junk files. Thanks in advance, to all that reply.

This is simple Google search worthy stuff.

Assuming you are doing a fresh Windows install: If it isn't already, set the BIOS to RAID mode, then when you start the PC keep pressing Ctrl+i to bring up the Intel RAID configuration utility. Pick the two drives, RAID 0, the size of the array (it will default to full size, should be about 297GB), and stripe size (default is 128KB, which is usually the best all around size), name it what you want, then save and exit. Finally, restart with the Windows 7 install CD/DVD and install onto said new array.

Sounds easy enough! Hopefully my ssds make it today.

Any suggestions on the best way to wipeout the data on my main hd? I'd like to use it for media stuff.

Yes, very easy, possibly even easier than it sounds as the Intel RAID utility pretty much walks you through it.

Wipe a normal conventional HDD? After you've installed Windows and boot up, right click My Computer and click Manage, then under the left menu click Disk Management. Find the HDD in the list, right click it, click Format, and click okay.

Wipe out...or repurpose? If it's wipeout and delete all traces of data on it, I recommend DBAN.Otherwise, if you're just repurposing, yep you just format it.
