Not that great, you can have a 6core with that oc right now, but you gonna pay for the cooling it takes to get there? why go with a 580 when there is the 570, 580 is not worth it.

Everyone, please keep in mind that the actual, high end X58 replacement CPU that's socket 2011 is due in Q3 or Q4 of 2011....in case some of you are thinking that the next i7 releasing soon is going to be that replacement. It's a replacement for the LGA1156 socket i7s, not the kickass 900 i7s that we've grown to love.

What's the difference if Sandy Bridge is a "high end" part or not? It still beats all other parts out there today, and is cheaper/easier to cool. Anandtech was able to stably overclock both the 2500k and 2600k parts to 4.4ghz using only the stock low-profile air cooler! Slap on a Noctua, and this puppy could hit 5ghz on air!

Anandtech also compared the fastest existing CPUs, and the Sandy Bridge i2600K (stock clocks) beats out the i7 980, i7 975, i7 950, etc.

Seems pretty clear to me that DSO should start offering systems with the i2600K ASAP.

i haven't read every review, but some have shown the i7 2600k beating the current i7 975 pretty well

EDIT: beaten to it lol

Guys, just because a CPU is fast does not mean the chipset is high end. The motherboards for Sandy Bridge (socket 1155) are set up like the socket 1156 P55 motherboards, dual memory, few PCIe lanes, few connectivity options, no bells and whistles, etc.

It is not a replacement for the high end socket 1366 motherboards. That's for the socket 2011 chipsets due out late in the year.

Sandy Bridge is a P55 replacement, the X58 replacement will come out later in the year.

high ghz stops mattering around 3.7ish right now, at least for gamers and most desktop (non-media editing) use, its fun to think about, however its not something to hold your breath for, better GPU power is what we need right now

depending on game, settings, and res.. some will be CPU bound 5GHz+  but yes, 8 threads, and 3.5Ghz is usually enough to feed wire frames to a single GPU.

Unless you play flight simulators, which are most often CPU bound. Such as DCS A-10C. Some folks have dual 580s in SLI, and it doesn't help the frame rate at all.

But yeah, most of the time, CPU clock speed won't help overall performance that much, as most applications are I/O bound. I just upgraded the CPUs of a server from 2Ghz to 3Ghz. I barely notice any performance improvement at all. Increasing RAM speed isn't noticeable either. But after upgrading to an Intel SSD, the machine feels like 3x faster.

Justin, I'm jealous of your 4 x Intel SSDs in Raid 0. What's the interface between the RAID controller and the CPU? I'm thinking of upgrading to two Intel SSDs in Raid 0, and wanted to ensure the RAID won't limit me to SATA II speeds overall, just per-disk.

He uses the normal Intel ICH10R SATA ports, as do I. Intel SSDs will not be bottlenecked on the ICH10R up until three in RAID0, then it's pretty well saturated at around 700MB/s.

So no one seems to be fired up about answering the question...? I too am looking to buy the 2600K ASAP. Any estimate on when we could be seeing new pcu and ASUS P8P67 mainboard on the load out options?
