Topic: Intel SSD 520 Install Help NeededPosted: 18 Mar 2012 at 10:00am |

Hi Folks,
I have an ASUS P6X58D Premium Mobo as part of my original DS build. I would like to upgrade my HDD to an Intel 520 240GB Drive. I don't want to clone the existing HDD. I would like to do a fresh install. My level of Tech experience is slightly above average. My questions are as follows: Is this SSD 100% compatable with my mobo, and will it run on SATA 6Gps Marvel controller that my Mobo has. Can I just take the disks that my DS rig came with, and use them to get back up and running, Will I lose the overclocking and tweaking of the rig that DS did for me? Any help, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Becks I assume I will need to update drivers, and Win 7 64bit |

The Intel 520 series will work perfectly fine with your system. You can definitely use the disks that came with the system, another good idea is to use the Windows backup service and restore your system back, here's a good video on how-to (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/help/videos/backing-up-and-restoring-your-computer). You should definitely update drivers and Windows if you do a fresh install. Honestly, fresh installs are usually the best (using the original Windows CD).

Hi Alex,
I think I might be over complicating this in my head. I picked up an Intel 520 SSD. What arrived is just the properly packaged drive. No cables, no disks..nada. Is it safe to assume that all I need to do is disconnect my hdd, install the ssd. Changes in Bios/Advanced Bios are make ssd #1 Drive, On Chip SATA Contoller to ACHI, and make 1st bootable CD Rom to do fresh Win7 install. Win 7 will do the trim for me ? Do I need anything else ? My ASUS P6X58D Premium Mobo has the same bios that shipped with it from DS about 2 years ago. I know there are many updates released. I am always reluctant to flash a bios. I know how to do it (I also know risks exist). Thanks, Becks |

Alex...
One more question: On the ASUS P6X58D Premium Mobo I have (4) available SATA 3.0Gb/s connections free. The (2) Marvell SATA 6.0 Gb/s connections are being used by the Aerocool to power the (2) external e-sata connections on the outside face plate. I now it's a noob question but, I can't seem to find the answer sine the Intel 520 SSD did not come with any instructions in the OEM box. Thanks..
I think I found my answer to this question. Hook the SSD up to the Marvell SATA 6.0 Gb/s. and move one of the cables from the Aerocool faceplate to a 3.0 connection. Edited by Becks - 20 Mar 2012 at 2:15pm |

Becks,
Yes, that's right. Windows will automatically take care of TRIM management for you. I recommend updating the BIOS, you should be fine. Looks like you got it all sorted out.
